My Hubby risked life and limb yesterday to chastize Cheney
Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 08:41 AM by mtnester
Cheney was nearby at the local county airport in Carroll, Ohio for a rally, which is about 6 miles from my work, 1.5 miles from my hubby's place of employment. His business is right on the corner of a major intersection with the freeway Cheney had to travel TWICE, once to go to the rally, and the other time to leave it. There were armed guards on all of the overpasses, so no freeway blogging, and they CLOSED THE ENTIRE FREEWAY FOR THE EVENT (3+ HOURS).

Hubby said they closed the freeway about 45 minutes prior to the event. After that, the first vehicle that came through was a huge black tinted window monstrosity that had a zillion antenna, some of them very wide in circumference. He said it crawled down the freeway, as if it were scanning for electronic devices, etc.

Next came state police, one by one, then a couple of single motorcycles. Finally, he could see the main caravan coming. Remember, there is not a moving soul on this freeway...totally deserted. He left the parking lot, down the side of the freeway to the berm. He was wearing a red work shirt and black jeans...could NOT miss him. He then raised his hands to show he was not armed, then as Cheney's caravan passed by, he used the "shame on you" motion with his hands, then double thumbs down. Did the same on the way back on the other side of the freeway...lone human in the berm.

I asked him if he realized that once that security sweep was made, that he was probably targeted by sharpshooters the entire time for standing on the side of the freeway all by his lonesome, and was lucky he was not tackled and trussed for questioning. He said yes, he figured all of that, but he felt it was so important that, how many times could a single individual get that close to Cheney and specifically show his displeasure in that type of way? He said there was no way he could NOT have been seen. He felt he was OBLIGATED, no matter the risk, to do this.

My man has the principals of a saint...I am SO proud of him. And he has had an "R" after his name on the voter rolls for years. I am sure we are now on some type of "list,", if we weren't already.

4. I will, he is so proud of himself too
He had this HUGE shit-eating grin on his face the entire time he told me the story, he actually called me from the side of the berm after the caravan had passed by to tell me what he did, but it was funner to WATCH him tell the story, with all the animation that went along with it.

He is usually apolitical, but this year, he is fuming at the miserable failure in the White House.

6. The list of great patriots in service to our nation grew by one.
Give your husband the thanks of millions of grateful citizens. He stood his ground. People need to think about that.

He stood his ground: America is his, not the corporations'.
He exercised his free speech despite tremendous effort to thwart it.
He reminded power that the will of the people will overcome tyranny

7. Wow - that's scary!
You are probably right about the sharpshooter.

I had a business in downtown Dallas (Deep Ellum, with a warehouse/loft that I lived in the back of) during the reign of George Senior.

We had to put our garbage out early Monday mornings for pickup, so early one rainy gray Monday I ran outside bleary eyed in nothing but boxers with a huge bag of garbage in each hand.

The second I stepped out a "man in black" grabbed me, knocked the garbage out of my hands and slammed me face up against the store front while George Sr.'s motorcade zoomed by, which is good because I would have probably mooned the bastard had I known he was coming.

The guy wasn't mean or anything and even apologized for the rough treatment, but still . . .

It is kind of creepy to think that they "knew" which of the warehouses had residents who might be on the street at that time of morning and had planned for the possibility. I wonder what would have happened had I been in the store front carrying anything that could have been construed as a weapon though . . .

Your husband is smart, principled and very brave. Please give him a big hug for me.

P.S. ReThugs are unlikely to risk "an incident" just before election. If Bush wins, however, ... .

Lame duck would have shot him dead along side the freeway and planted a gun nearby, to solidify his "assassination" attempt.

"Mrs. Mtnester, we are sorry to inform you your husband was trying to kill the VP, and we had to shoot him...and since he was married to you, we will have to arrest you and the rest of your family for being potential insurgents, as we are sure he HAD to discuss this with all of you ahead of time"

And then we all disappear.

19. You know, he would have done it AFTER as well...
My sensible, down to earth husband KNOWS we will be taking it to the street if it's stolen again, and he knows the risks, but he says they are of no consequence compared to what will happen under another 4 years of *.

I was touched, cause he was telling me he knew we were BOTH going to risk life and limb if that happens...regular folk like us (and believe me, we are as regular as you get) would be out there kickin...we know...I am sure we would see many of YOU all there with us too.

As you can see, I am using the hypothetical tense, as I have my fingers crossed, my lucky rabbits foot on, and my four leaf clover working overtime.

20. You and your husband have brought me great joy today.
I work in DC and have been aware of the corruption since Bush I in 1992. When I hear that folks like you and your husband understand exactly what is going on, know what's at stake, and are willing to fight to reclaim the America we once knew, I feel such a sense of pride... and relief.

Let's not follow the path of the collapsed Roman Empire. Let's restore America's integrity, dignity...and honor.

I salute you and your husband!

With warmest regards,
Ewan I.

29. A brave action indeed!
The amount (and kind) of security for Cheney sounds chilling:

"the first vehicle that came through was a huge black tinted window monstrosity that had a zillion antenna, some of them very wide in circumference. He said it crawled down the freeway, as if it were scanning for electronic devices, etc."

I'll bet the reservists in Iraq who refused to drive that convoy without any protection or cover would love to have a vehicle like this. In fact, its use by Cheney makes America look like Iraq, at least as far as the VP is concerned. Whatever danger Cheney thinks he's in can't be compared to what the soldiers in Iraq face daily. This is surreal.
