Cheney: Terrorists May Bomb U.S. Cities

By ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS, Associated Press Writer

CARROLL, Ohio - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) on Tuesday evoked the possibility of terrorists bombing U.S. cities with nuclear weapons and questioned whether Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) could combat such a threat, which the vice president called a concept "you've got to get your mind around."

"The biggest threat we face now as a nation is the possibility of terrorists ending up in the middle of one of our cities with deadlier weapons than have ever before been used against us — biological agents or a nuclear weapon or a chemical weapon of some kind to be able to threaten the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans," Cheney said.

"That's the ultimate threat. For us to have a strategy that's capable of defeating that threat, you've got to get your mind around that concept," Cheney said.

(snip... Regarding whether Kerry would be "tough and aggressive...) "I don't believe it," the vice president said. "I don't think there's any evidence to support the proposition that he would, in fact, do it."

Hey DICK!! You're the incumbents -- what are YOU doing? Where is YOUR plan?!? Here's a report from a few days ago on how YOU are doing, Dick:

Internal report takes aim at port security efforts
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Homeland Security Department's independent investigator has concluded that federal inspectors of oceangoing shipping containers still need to improve their detection equipment and search procedures to prevent terrorists from sneaking weapons of mass destruction into U.S. ports.

(snip)
"Improvements are needed in the inspection process to ensure that weapons of mass destruction or other implements of terror do not gain access to the U.S through oceangoing cargo containers," Ervin wrote.

Democrats have been urging action on this since BEFORE 9/11, Dick, and even after those attacks and four years of "alerts," you haven't done the job. Read Kerry's plan on port security, airline security, chem/nuke facilities, bioterrorism, etc., and get back to us, DICK.

2. Mr. Cheney: Why are you allowing terrorists w/bombs into America?
Didn't we give you enough money to stop them? Could a rich man give up a yacht so we can inspect a port? Do you think a rich man would do that? For America? Are rich men Americans?

7. Look, I am just trying to get some action on this
Everyone on this site loves to post this and that and make fun of Bush but so often no one initiates anything!!!! Whenever I do initiate anything and don't put a catchy headline on it no one checks into the thread and it dies. Whenever I do put a catchy urgent headline on I get these kinds of replies that surpress the whole momentum of what I am trying to do to help out John Kerry. I happen to think this is important and we have the opportunity to really influence the media if we get 1000 letters from DU people to turn this around on Cheney. Why does everyone have to attack the messenger when he tries to make a difference? That is something I have never understood on this site? I hope you will at least write a letter and do something positive rather than criticize my genuine concern about this issue.

Why do a few negative people have to attack the messenger when he tries to make a difference? That is something I have never understood on this site? I hope you will at least write a letter and do something positive rather than criticize my genuine concern about this issue. This is a place for action and making a positive difference not putting people down and being negative.

10. This HAS been a crying issue
along with vulnerable ports and plants. There has been no noise machine complaints about being left wide open, even inviting attacks by not putting in defenses, publicizing weaknesses without action, letting really dangerous people go while rounding up schmoes and tokens.

Added to that is the generically more dangerous continuation of Bush I in not rounding up loose nukes. Nixon complained loudly. Ted Turner privately goes about cleaning up old nuke plants. Treaties trashed with plans for anti-missile shields and new nukes. Going soft on Pakistan. Doing nothing or antagonizing North Korea and Iran away from negotiations of the Clinton era.

Armageddon fatalism and giving nuke Israel all that Sharon wants. Unbelievable delusions and counter intuitive reasoning from the lying villains themselves.

The whole fish rots tip to tail, but hey, the World Series is coming up.The infuriating thing is that the evil enablers of this unnecessary threat IS the Bush mis-administration. Naturally they turn around the gun on us and make it into their advantage.

You might have noticed that the media responds to celebrities and the Right Wing noise machines and will respond to real world crises only when the bodies, flood waters, rubble pile up outside their offices.

As for what plays here at DU, traction for the possible is admittedly also skewed by the American weird scene.

You might put a strong alert for people to go to their media blasters at campaign underground whenever Cheney opens his mouth and keeps repeating and repeating the same stuff no matter WHO complains or how caught out he is. Getting them out is the current priority to achieving safety and peace.

The nuke issue is worse than you think it is. Anyone's ability to awaken America is very skewed. Cheney is not winning new votes nor can they engineer the threat they waving around.

After the election this issue must not recede. The lame duck is still a cornered rat, senile and spiteful.

I really think this post has a point about rapid response. Refine not kill. All priorities are high considering their seriousness, but time demands being what they are DU may be emptying of activists to the streets while newcomers starting to post start grappling with what has been going on here for some time.

We all have things that Kerry and Edwards should do or not do better. LTTE's and phone calls at this stage would be better than sounding alarms. Channel your frustration against the Bush Empire.
