Kerry only 2 back in latest West Virginia poll - Kerry 45% Bush 47%

W. Va. Democrat makes it look easy

Washington, DC, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- West Virginia Secretary of State Joe Manchin has a healthy lead over developer Monty Warner in the gubernatorial race, a poll out Tuesday indicates.

A popular statewide officeholder, Manchin is vying to replace fellow Democratic Gov. Bob Wise, in the governor's mansion. A survey of 600 likely West Virginia voters conducted for his campaign had him at 57 percent. Republican Warner, a political novice, was at 24 percent. Nineteen percent said they were undecided.

The same poll showed President George Bush with a 2-point lead, 47 percent to 45 percent, over Democratic nominee John Kerry. Two percent of respondents said they were for liberal independent Ralph Nader and 5 percent said they were undecided.

The Global Strategy Group poll for the Manchin campaign was conducted last Tuesday through Thursday and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

5. I was disappointed when ...
I heard that the Kerry camp was pulling resources out of WV. I had to assume they knew what they were doing, but I have e-friends in WV who told me, repeatedly, that WV vas very winnable.

Sounds like they were right.

12. Cool.
I saw that ad. Hope it gets lots of air-time. What I heard, though, was that staff had been shifted out of WV to either IA or MN. But I can't confirm that.

Either way, it would be great to see Kerry pick up WV. :smoke:

8. Like he did in 2000?
Don't forget, Byrd endorsed and campaigned for Gore in 2000. Byrd is many things, but he's not God. The fact that the Kerry campaign has appeared to pull out of the state certainly isn't good news.

13. Sometimes you win a state that's not a top-tier target
Like Clinton winning Arizona in 1996. Ad budgets aren't everything.

9. this is important as it may give us a chance to win
Edited on Tue Oct-19-04 05:31 PM by the_outsider
even if we lose both Ohio and Florida. Gore States (260) + Nevada + West Virginia will do it. But then again, if we win WV, we are probably winning Ohio as well so that makes WV less important. I guess that must have been the reasoning behind pulling out of WV.

14. In states like this, we just need to work like hell to get out the vote!!
Keep it under the radar, let the Bush supporters feel complacent enough to stay home, and work like crazy to get out the vote...

I think that could swing it in Virginia and North Carolina, as well...
