Garin-Hart-Young (D) for Mongiardo. 10/15-17. MoE 4.4%. (10/6-7 results.)
Mongiardo (D) 43 (39)
Bunning (R) 43 (47)
Killer trends in Mongiardo's favor, and perfectly reasonable considering the beating Bunning is taking in the state press (including the Mongiardo endorsements in the state's two largest newspapers). If confirmed by independent polling, this one moves up even further on the rankings in the previous poll. Bunning this far under 50 percent is almost DOA. In fact, the poll pegs Bunning's re-elect rating at 36 percent.

2. This is just so great
All these senate races suddenly becoming competetive in deep red states.

We may end up taking back the senate with a bigger margin than we would have guessed.

4. I watched the debate on C-SPAN.
Bunning is clueless....he couldn't string 2 coherent sentences together.

Sems that Republicans rely on people with "marque" value over principle and capability. It will be very interesting to see how this race breaks.

5. This is a DEM poll
Don't get me wrong - I'm very hopeful about this race, and the trend is unmistakable. Even so, I'd like to temper my celebration at least a bit until we get reliable independent polls to confirm this. In general, I take partisan polls with a grain of salt.

14. the good thing is that he still has 2 weeks...
Plus, if the momentum he has now keeps up, he may even win comfortably.

6. Could This Help Kerry at the Top of the Ticket?
I hate to borrow this phrase...but does a rising tide lift all boats? The Lexington Hearld-Leader endorsed Kerry and Kentucky does have a long-standing Democratic tradition, although the "guns and God" crowd have done a number on the state in the past several years just as in other places in the South.

But Clinton did win here in '92 and I think the K/E campaign ought to at least think about sending Edwards to visit

9. It may help but i must say that if Kerry is within a few points in KY, we
won't need that state to achieve victory since the nation will be full 'o blue. Latest head-to-head indicate 15 - 20 point edge for chimpy. Fuck that...let's win them all!

10. I LIKE that phrase!
And I think you are right--it could well help Kerry, especially since he does have enough God, when ya look at it (catholic, but what the hell) and he does have guns (if they are looking for a reason to vote for him, and guns is it, he owns 'em!).

Would not surprise me one iota if Edwards does visit, to prop up the Dem if it really starts looking do-able!

7. Kerry did send a rep and he came to the Airport in Louisville
early on for a speech at a hanger. Edwards came for a money raiser more recently. If they come back it should be to Lexington or Paducah. The scuttle butt is that Fletcher hates being guv and that Bunning is running to keep the seat and then he'll retire. Then Fletcher will appoint himself as Senator. Dr. Dan has to win.

12. Maybe the voters
...might just rebel at that, wanting to pick their own senator, and not having the governor pick himself for the job. It's pretty arrogant of him--why didn't he step down, challenge the drooling guy in the primary, and go for it? Or have the drooler just decline to run again? Or run while still in office, like Georgie Porgie did when he was TX gov? Talk about a chickenshit pol!

13. Clinton won Kentucky in '92 and '96
Kerry should pull a Clinton and visit the Univ. of Kentucky campus sometime between now and election day. Clinton did that on the last day of campaigning in 1996 and it allowed him to carry Lexington, which in turned, helped him carry state cause it got all the students energized. If Bush can go to NJ, then Kerry should make a pit stop in red territory.
