But the real "turf" is the news, which no one owns. Some events favor the president. In Afghanistan, for example, elections provided an inspiring test of his "peace through liberty" vision. But the economic news is mixed at best—with $55-a-barrel oil and massive deficits slowing the economy—and viewers/voters are bombarded with an endless stream of casualty reports from Iraq. Long lines of people anxious about flu shots won't help, and Kerry is stoking fears (unwarranted, Bush insists) of a revived draft. If the president is superstitious, he might want to reconsider his election-night plans. The last incumbent to watch returns in the White House was also a Republican: Gerald Ford.
