Why we blew it on Mary Cheney (editorial “we”)
Edited on Sun Oct-17-04 05:54 PM by troublemaker
The reason it worked so well was that most people are unconsciously anti-gay bigots. Dems handicapped by ambivalence on gay matters didn’t know how to “play” the lesbian thing. Jesus Christ! How would you play any other instance of naked bigotry?

No point crying over split milk, but we can help repair this situation in the next two weeks. I'm not saying to bring it up, but if any person says anything negative about the Mary Cheney mention you slam them hard and immediately as a bigot. “How odd that you think that you hear the word “gay” as a slur...”

If someone says it was calculated to hurt Bush with his base say, “So you are outraged that Kerry might have interfered with George Bush’s divine right to the bigot vote? Oooo… wouldn’t want that to happen.”

And anyone who uses the word “outed” needs to be backed down on the spot. Mary Cheney has been an open and proud (thank you very much…) gay woman for over ten years, and it’s wrong for her parents to try to drive her back into the closet just to score some cheap political points.

2. If I actually run into a real person who's talking about this 'issue'..
I will look at them with a funny face and think seriously about clocking them, as punishment for sheer idiocy.

3. Watching the debates I thought Kerry was very sensitive to Mary
This is faux outrage. It's total bullshit. Suddenly the GOP is the lesbian-sensitive party? give me a fucking break.

4. I don't think we blew it.
Nobody I know is talkng about it. Zilch. And I can't believe the Bushbots all defending a gay person will play well to their base. I think they shot themselves in the foot.

24.

5. I just don't know why the Republicans are so ashamed of Mary Cheney.
One sentence, to end the whole problem.

Geee I wonder why she has daddy to speak for her?

7. I think it is gonna flip on them
...and soon. Can I suggest that anyone who is unhappy with the way the media is portraying this do what I have been doing--writing to the networks, the media, anyone who covers this story, and point out to them that they are LYING about Mary's status and they are NOT COVERING THE ISSUE FULLY. They need to include these points in their coverage:

--Mary campaigned for her father as an out lesbian with her partner, and had her pic taken with Log Cabin supporters for a five hundred buck contribution--the Pet Lesbian of the GOP.

--Mary worked for Coors making 93K a year, doing outreach and selling WE HATE GAYS beer to gay bars.

--Mary is a paid--PAID--member of her daddy's reSelection campaign.

Your talking points are here: http://www.blogactive.com/

FIGHT BACK. Do NOT let these people get away with LIES.

8. Kerry, I think, spoke what he believed to be a true statement about...
...Mary Cheney and any other gay or lesbian person. Bob Schaeffer asked a question which if answered truthfully by both candidates would have got each of them in hot water with all sides. Dubya of course lied with his response.

I just would have liked it a lot better if Kerry had given an equally vague generalization for his response as Dubya, unless of course Kerry could have said something like, "Well, I know that Mary told me just last week when she was having lunch with Teressa and me...." and then follow with the statement he gave. Of course, there would have been no reason for Mary Cheney to have had any dialog with John Kerry, or anyone from Kerry's campaign, or even any situation where Mary Cheney had made such a statement publicly, soooo.... it was a set-up bull-shit question.

That last debate would have been much more interesting had the moderator been somebody else, like Dan Rather of CBS, or Al Franken of AAR. Oh well!

10. I wonder why the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD)
hasn't come to the defense of Kerry?

9. Remember the not-so-sorry "sorry" Kerry said about VVAW?
He once said something like, "I went to Vietnam, I saw what I saw, I came back and I told the truth about it. And if some people still have a problem with that 35 years later, well I'm sorry." It wasn't an apology.

I wonder whether he couldn't say something along those lines this time. "I said gays and lesbians are God's children, and that Dick Cheney's daughter is being herself as God made her. I meant it in the same way someone could say Alexandra is tall or Vanessa is blonde. If some people still see the word 'lesbian' as a tawdry insult, rather than a natural trait in God's world, which is what I was saying, well then I'm sorry they think that."
