Bush Insulted People Who've Lost Their Jobs
Talking point - keep hammering this one home. I might write a LTTE on this as well.

As we all saw, every time Bush was asked about job loss he rambled on about education. He waved around the NCLBA like it was something to be proud of.

-----------------------------------------------------------
SCHIEFFER: Mr. President, what do you say to someone in this country who has lost his job to someone overseas who's being paid a fraction of what that job paid here in the United States?

BUSH: I'd say, Bob, I've got policies to continue to grow our economy and create the jobs of the 21st century. And here's some help for you to go get an education. Here's some help for you to go to a community college.

We've expanded trade adjustment assistance. We want to help pay for you to gain the skills necessary to fill the jobs of the 21st century.

You know, there's a lot of talk about how to keep the economy growing. We talk about fiscal matters. But perhaps the best way to keep jobs here in America and to keep this economy growing is to make sure our education system works.

I went to Washington to solve problems. And I saw a problem in the public education system in America. They were just shuffling too many kids through the system, year after year, grade after grade, without learning the basics.

And so we said: Let's raise the standards. We're spending more money, but let's raise the standards and measure early and solve problems now, before it's too late.

No, education is how to help the person who's lost a job. Education is how to make sure we've got a workforce that's productive and competitive.

Got four more years, I've got more to do to continue to raise standards, to continue to reward teachers and school districts that are working, to emphasize math and science in the classrooms, to continue to expand Pell Grants to make sure that people have an opportunity to start their career with a college diploma.

And so the person you talked to, I say, here's some help, here's some trade adjustment assistance money for you to go a community college in your neighborhood, a community college which is providing the skills necessary to fill the jobs of the 21st century. And that's what I would say to that person.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Now, how do you think this made the white-collar college graduate who lost their technical job feel? Telling them they need a SKILL and to go to school?

Tell that to the people with degrees that are working in jobs that they're far overqualified for, because it's the only job they can get.

How do you think that made the blue-collar factory worker who lost their job? That they didn't have a SKILL? That they need to go to college, when they have families to feed and food to put on the table. When that manufacturing job probably paid pretty good and gave that family a comfortable life that met their needs.

I know how they feel, because my husband is a blue-collar worker that has been laid off and has had difficulty finding a new job. You know what? He HAS a skill. He was trained in the Army and has years of on the job training for his skill. When he's working, he makes good money - better than some college graduates and far more than the average American salary.

Bush thumbed his nose at every American that has lost their job in the past four years. He must think they all have rich daddys with connections that can get them into Harvard and give them money to live off of while they're doing it.

Bush INSULTED these people. Keep reminding people about that. If you know someone who has lost their job, tell them. I will tell you one thing, something like that will not go over well in rural areas full of blue-collar workers. They will be offended.

1. he's Clueless in DC
thinks people who lost jobs are just too dumb to find better work

meanwhile -- what "jobs" are people suppose to train for when jobs from all sectors are being outsourced -- by the time you "train" for a new job that new job will be gone

on a sidenote: I heard on CNN from a talking head that bush* Inc. was going to roll out some new spin on the job numbers -- ready for this? job numbers are a myth

anyone else hear about this or have a link?

he is so freaking out of touch. Does he not realize that the IT industry and manufacturing jobs ARE NOT BEING REPLACED WITH SOMETHING ELSE?

4. Yep, exactly right
A degree will only get you so far when there AREN'T ANY JOBS.

Plus, last time I looked there is a BLUE-COLLAR segment in this society. If everyone runs right out and gets degrees for white-collar jobs (which may or may not exist), who is left to fill the blue-collar jobs? The people with degrees working out of their field in jobs their overqualified for, that's who.

10. My mom was the same
Worked her way up to a highly respected white-collar job with a 6-figure salary with no degree.

She's retired now, and they now require a Bachelor's Degree for her position... the person that replaced her has a Masters.

Because those are the jobs that are available. Either that or Wal Mart.

5. I believe in lifelong learning, but I don't think people should have to

constantly retrain for the job market. Most people should be able to spend their working lives in one field, in one job if they want to, without layoffs and re-education, re-training. Layoffs should be rare because CEOs should be more dedicated to making sure their company survives and all involved do well. Our society is truly fucked up these days. Employers have stopped valuing employees. It doesn't matter how hard you work, how well you work, how loyal you are, you're just a cog in the machine to them. The labor movement must be revitalized and broadened if there is to be any hope.

Learning new things should be the fun part of life, not the must-do to get by they're making it into today.

13. I'm a huge advocate of education too
We're teaching our children college is just what you do... not an "if" but a "where". But you're right, people shouldn't have to re-educate themselves in various fields several times over the course of their life just to find employment.

As well, I think the most compelling thing about what Bush said is it equally offended all people who have lost their jobs no matter what type of job it was. There is nothing more insulting to a 40-something yr old factory worker than to say they are "unskilled". Not to mention the thousands of people who HAVE degrees that lost their jobs - he just dismissed all of them.

This might win us Ohio guys.

6. I loved that bit of stupidity ...
Get laid off and go to community college. Just take that Computer Science degree from a 4 year college, tear it up, and go get yourself an associates degree in, well, what exactly? Basketweaving?

And, wtf is "paygo"? Isn't that spaghetti sauce?

9. I was yelling at the TV at that point
Because I lost my IT job because the company encouraged adding certifications and I went and got myself certified. I was first laid off because I had the most certs and made the most money.

I lost my job because I MORE skills and MORE knowledge than my coworkers.

12. Yep, it was completely insulting.
Bush is so out of touch he probably thinks that the only people who lost jobs were unskilled fast-food workers.

18. They're the only ones who haven't lost their jobs
You can't outsource the person who hands you your burger unless they discover transporter technology.

Then everything will be outsourced.

22. actually.... burger jobs are being outsourced
heard a story about it on NPR a couple of months ago

when you pull up to the drive-thru and place your order -- that order is sent to a 'call center' (could be in the same town or two states over or on the other side of the ocean) -- your order is then routed back to the burger place where it is filled

14. He's fighting the last war...
When manufacturing jobs began slipping away in the 1980's, we were told that we'd all get more education and become computer programmers and everything would be all right. Turns out that today it's a hell of a lot easier to send electronic data around the world than it is to ship steel. Knowledge workers are more at risk of losing their jobs these days.

My Advice: Join the Building Trades.

You know every single person that has been affected directly by outsourcing and just general layoffs were probably taken aback by Bush's statement.

Let's work it.

Yeah, pretty big talk for someone who's had EVERYTHING handed to him on a sliver platter. When I heard him say that, I remember thinking the exact same thing, that he just pissed off millions of hard-working Americans. Plus, when he made the comment about solutions not coming in the form of 'complaints', I got the sense that he was just acting like a dickhead boss scolding his employees. I hope other Americans saw it the same way.
