Bush approval hits all-time low in Maryland/ majority say Bush lied
Two out of three Maryland voters believe the United States is likely to be the target of another terrorist attack in the next ffew months, but most experssed satisfaction with steps taken by their state governments to protect them, a new poll for The Sun suggests. A growing disapproval of President Bush, however, has resulted in the lowest approval rating for Bush in his presidency. A majority believe the president misled the country about the situation in Iraq before the war.

53% of Maryland voters believe Bush misled the country about the situation in Iraq--this includes 20% of Republican voters.

The Maryland Poll, a telephone survey of 1,200 randomly seleted likely voters, conducted Jan 2-5 has a margin of error of 2.8%.

More than half of Maryland voters (51%) said they would choose someone other than Bush for president.

Whites would re-elect Bush by 51-43
African Americans want someone else 79-8.

Greater Baltimore is evenly split, while Greater Washington is 2-1 against the president's re-election.

Howard Dean would defeat Bush 47-43 percent, the only candidate who was pitted opposite Bush.

1. I'm sure Mr. ONeill's comments and book and memo will make
these numbers much worse for the "liar in office"

2. This is pretty bad for dems if
in the state with 2:1 Dem majority Dean only has a slim (47:43)
margin over the monkey.

5. at this early stage those are good numbers
look over the history of polling in the last several elections and incumbents always start out better over challengers because they are so better known and the challengers aren't. For instance, Carter was beating Reagan by 20-points in Jan 1980. Bush I was over any Democrat in '92.

I wouldn't worry about it. Maryland will be solid. It is interesting that the big story of this poll that most people conclude that Bush is a liar isn't the bigger story.

6. see my above response
The incumbent always performs better at this early stage because he is much better known. The issues of Bush's credibility for instance works in favor of Dean who has attacked Bush on this since the beginning.

7. Dean winning here and there before Primaries start is great news
An incumbant president should be crushing a challenger at this stage of the campaign. Most don't even start to tune in until the night of the Iowa Caucuses.
