Flashback to 2000: Wingers predicted Clinton would refuse to step down
Lest any wingers checking into DU think their side would NEVER conjure up anything as paranoid as we do here. :eyes:

9. An extended Clinton term (37). Twenty-seven readers predicted that Mr. Clinton would declare martial law or a state of emergency and cancel the election--a rather farfetched notion. Others thought Mr. Clinton would ignore, reinterpret or seek repeal of the 22nd Amendment limiting him to two terms.

1. It was a little different under Clinton
Since we are in a state of perpetual war, it is more likely in this instance that the Bush Administration would do everything in their power to maintain it.

I think it's crazier to think Clinton would have done it, because he had far too much political oppositon. In this instance, Bush's party has been entrenched in power (though the Senate could switch) for the last decade.

Bush, who has recieved every penny he has ever asked for out of Congress, every authorization for military action he ever asked for, and who has proven to alter the Federal law to suit the needs of the Administration is in the position to do so.

It is a crackpot theory, though, and I wouldn't bet on Bush doing it since I think even his diehard supporters would turn on him.

2. Thats far more far fetched though...
Clinton was at the end of his 2 terms, and was already preparing his 'retirement'. getting offices, planning presidential libraries, etc. Not to mention that he had hopes his legacy would be continued by Gore. On top of that, even though there were aspects of the right that just infuriated Clinton, he always had hopes of moderating the disputes, and helping the country move forward.

Bush on the other hand is not at the end. He is fighting tooth and nail to win and maintain control. Bush is fighting a never ending war against the seperatists....sorry, the terrorists....and goes back and forth between saying that we're all in terrible jeapordy and that we're safer with him in control.

He and his cabal more and more control the media, and his politcal leanings towards corporatism where energy companies write energy policy, and right aligned interest groups write legislation that is bullied into law without even a hint of letting the democrats debate it, are nothing short of 2 steps shy of outright fascism.

To say Clinton would try and cancel the election was totally retarded and grounded only in their lingering hatred of Clinton because he beat poppy bush.

To say Bush would try and cancel the elction is only partially retarded because his policy decisions to this point are taking this country closer and closer to a corporate fascist state.

3. By the way, when wingers worry about liberals doing something
liberals should worry about wingers doing it. Wingers are classic projectors, putting off onto lefties what they are too ashamed to admit they are only too ready to do. Remember how they talked of Gore's winning the EC and not the popular vote, and the attack they would stage on the EC in that event? :eyes:

4. Is It really Just Being Paranoid
Or could there be something to it, we're not talking about Clinton or even Gore, we're talking about a man who didn't win the 2000 election.

A man who appears desperate, a man who wants to maintain his control over the strongest nation in the world, a man who will never admit that he has made any mistakes. A man who probably thinks that losing would be an admission of making mistakes, therefore if he keeps the
presidency he has not made any mistakes.

Republican officials are already trying to guarantee the vote goes his way, from Florida, to Ohio, and now South Dakota. If these people
are willing to do all of this to make sure Bush gets 4 more years, why is it beyond reason to theorize that Bush may very well refuse to
leave.

All you have to do is to look at this administrations disregard for the rule of law, both US and International.

So in this case it's not that far fetched.

6. I totally agree.
The Republicans have murdered trust between the parties because they have abused it so thoroughly. I was just reading about Democratic voter registration forms being destroyed by outsourced Republican elections officials in Nevada:

Voter fraud isn't just for Florida anymore

http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/index.html

Jimmy Carter said we all need to be vigilant about voter fraud in Florida again this year and scrutinize the process. Looks like that applies to the rest of the country, too. In Nevada, employees of a GOP-funded voter registration company say they watched their supervisors rip up Democrats' registration forms -- and that hundreds and maybe thousands of Democrats' forms have been trashed.

From KLAS TV in Las Vegas -- and isn't it heartening to see a local TV I-team actually report on something other than exposes of local strip clubs or the latest household item that can kill you?:

"Two former workers say they personally witnessed company supervisors rip up and trash registration forms signed by Democrats."

"'We caught her taking Democrats out of my pile, handed them to her assistant and he ripped them up right in front of us. I grabbed some of them out of the garbage and she tells her assistant to get those from me,' said Eric Russell, former Voters Outreach employee. Eric Russell managed to retrieve a pile of shredded paperwork including signed voter registration forms, all from Democrats. We took them to the Clark County Election Department and confirmed that they had not, in fact, been filed with the county as required by law."
