Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 12:43 PM by Skinner
I called Arby's and said I wanted to lodge a complaint. The response of the person on the other end: "About Sinclair Advertising?"

We're starting to get noticed.

Here's the list of advertisers: http://www.boycottsbg.com/advertisers/Default.aspx

If that address doesn't work, we have a copy of the national advertisers list on our server, here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/archive/sinclair.html

Point out to them that their customers are no doubt both Democratic and Republican and that by continuing to air their commercials on Sinclair stations they are endorsing Sinclair's blatant political agenda.

8. We're Working In The Media Forum
There's a big difference between local and national advertising. I'm trying to compile a list of local advertisers that DU members can approach whose impact on their local stations are far greater than the national ones. Just vision that scene in Private Parts with the manic sales people...that's what I'm aiming at.

Also, there have been a few Sinclair advertisers send me PMs, emails and posts. There are some strategies listed there...not to completely pull their advertising, just reduce it. By cancelling, you lose all contact inside the station. By reducing, you hurt them (especially the sales rep who lives off commission) and they're gonna try all they can to get you back to where you were before.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=109x14363

Here is the thread I'm attempting to coordinate with. For those who'd like to really explore this further and start a discussion on other strategies and keeping the pressure on Sinclair, please join us there. I'd like to assist, but seems like this place is full of chiefs and not enough Indians.

Cheers!

13. My letter to IAMS
As an owner of three dogs and three cats, I am a steady customer for many of your pet food products.

I'm disappointed, however, to learn that IAMS is an advertiser with Sinclair Broadcast Group, an organization that is planning to air slurs against presidential candidate John Kerry just before the November elections. Sinclair's blatant self-interest in Federal de-regulation of media ownership makes their "news" a clumsy ploy to manipulate the elections in their own favor.

Regardless of which candidate your company may endorse, please show your patriotic support for the democratic process by refusing to support such blatant partisan sabotage.

I mentioned all the same points, and added that I didn't want to support a company that was trying to destroy our democracy. I also wrote that animal lovers are a tightly knit group.. and word travels fast. Unless Iams is owned by a multi-conglomerate.. I think they'll take heed. COOL!!

31. And yet another....
to Subway this time. Ford, K-Mart and ITT Tech next.

A personal connection really motivates me, so I'm targeting companies that are genuinely a part of my consumer habits: IAMS (I'm owned by 6 pets), Subway (I eat there at least 3-4 times per month), Ford (I own a Ford), ITT Tech (I'm in the computer tech industry) and K-Mart (around the corner, shop there every week).

So if any of these companies ever bothers to check up on my feedback, they'll soon realize that I'm a hard-core member of their customer base.

Will more people be curious to see the film the harder we fight it - projecting "Well it must be really bad if they don't want me to see" - therefore people who DON'T see will just assume it's bad

33. The opposite could be true as well
that these tactics re-energize the base for Kerry. They don't care about seeing the film...they DO care about a fair election and don't want Bush! It might work to push undecideds as well. There are already doubts...otherwise why the discussions throughout the nation which come down to "Do you trust George Bush?" regardless of the subject.

No, I think this is going to backfire BIG TIME.

They guy who answered said that the 515 number is not the one we should be calling. However he did add that the phone has been ringing off the hook this morning. He said he is doing a poll about which state people are calling. Most calls coming in from NY and CA. He had just gotten one from texas and then mine from PA of course.

29. Yeah, that first number is wrong.
I called the second number, and that guy on the other end read this pathetic prepared statement that "Chili's doesn't support either political party, and Chili's is just trying to get their message out." I politely explained to him that by advertising on Sinclair, they were indirectly supporting the republican candidate, and they were supporting a smear campaign. I also explained that Chili's had a choice about where they spend their advertising dollar, just like I have a choice about where to spend my dining dollar.

I'm never going to eat there again.

30. Good news.....but.....if possible we need to call LOCAL ADVERTISERS
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 01:35 PM by RedEarth
take a look at what Josh Marshall says...

October 12, 2004 -- 02:20 PM EDT // link // print)

A brief follow-up on contacting advertisers. I'm already getting reports from the field that many Sinclair advertisers are starting to communicate their concern to Sinclair. If you don't live anywhere near a Sinclair station then by all means make your concerns known to their national advertisers. But from knowledgable folks I talk to, I get the strong impression that the real point of vulnerability are the local advertisers. So if you live in or really anywhere near a Sinclair market that's definitely where to focus.

-- Josh Marshall

From a reader ...

I’ve worked in the media business for 30 years and I guarantee you that sales is what these local TV stations are all about. They don’t care about license renewal or overwhelming public outrage. They care about sales only, so only local advertisers can affect their decisions.

Here's how to have an impact on the local Sinclair stations: first, watch the station and make a list of all of the local advertisers. Then, write to the sales manager -- not the general manager, but the sales manager -- and tell him that you're going to contact all of the local advertisers to register a protest about the station airing this program. Be specific -- mention the names of those local advertisers. Then, actually contact them (if you write or email, cc the sales manager). These stations make most of their income (around 60%) from local advertisers and will NOT want to have that income threatened.

This has worked numerous times. A recent example was when a local radio morning show host in North Carolina told his listeners to aim for bicyclists on the road (he was ranting about how cyclists have no right to share the roadways). The station defended him for several days amidst public outcry, until the advertisers, under pressure from outraged cyclists, began to make noise. Suddenly, the station reversed itself, suspended the host for several days, and made him do public service announcements for weeks about sharing the road with cyclists.

This can work! I plan to start tonight!

Sounds right to me.
