What newspaper endorsement would you be surprised to see Kerry get?
For me it would be my local daily, The Wisconsin State Journal (our other daily, the morning paper, The Capital Times, will endorse Kerry--it is a great progressive paper). But the Wisconsin State Journal seems, if anything, to gotten more conservative. Still, they did shock me by endorsing Clinton in '92--but I don't see them doing it this time. But if he did--that would be BIG.

9. Disagree
I've seen much more balance in the Chronicle this year and I would not be surprised to see them endorse Kerry.

2. Washington Times.
As an aside, I wouldn't get so excited about MAJOR paper endorsements

Remember, the NYT endorsed Gore (right?), but their reporting endorsed Bush.

It's the regional papers which have a ton of sway. In the primaries, Edwards got a lot of mileage out of getting the endorsements of some big Iowa and Wisconsin papers.

4. Circulation numbers are what is significant

8. If a big corp paper endorses a candidate in a two inch column on a page
nobody every reads on a single day, yet reports every day all over the front page in a way that is little more than propaganda for the other candidate, circualtion does matter. It matters that millions of people are reading lies. That's why the NYT endorsement is worth nothing if they're still allowing Judith Miller and Seelye and Wilgoren to editorialize in their reporting.

I would be surprised if the Washington Post endorsed Kerry, considering how much they have supported the neocon agenda.

7. Cincinnati Enquirer - automatic Repug endorsements
year after year. If they ever endorsed a Dem candidate it would be big news. In fact, it made national news when they published an editorial near the end of the Watergate scandal saying that it was time for Nixon to go. At that point, everyone knew it was all over for Nixon.

I'll have to see a Kerry endorsement to believe it and I'm not very hopeful.

They were one of only two or three papers in Michigan not to endorse Granholm for Governor in 2002.

18. USA Today
Especially since they don't do political endorsements.

But I would be shocked to see the Orange County Register endorse Kerry.

Would like to see some big midwestern papers endorse Kerry, such as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the two Madison papers, both Chicago papers (that would shock me), Cleveland Plain Dealer, and the Cincinatti Enquirer. The midwest is a huge swing area.

23. The Chicago Tribune.
I would be very surprised if the Tribune will endorse Kerry. I know the exact rationale the Tribune will use...that Bush is "more effective" in the "war on terror". I can just read the editorial now.

which has one of the most knuckle-draggingly Republican editorial pages in the country, or The St. Paul Pioneer Press, which is right up there.

35. I agree... if they endorse Mel, they definitely will endorse Bush.
At least the St. Pete Times took back (unprecedented for them) their endorsement of Mel during the Repub primaries because of his vicious attacks on his opponent McCollum and his horrible stance on issues.
