What's Miramax's/Michael Moores position on making copies
of F 9/11 and leaving them around town for random people to find?

1. The DVD has full compliment of warnings
plus CSS encryption so I think they would take a dim view of DISTRIBUTING copies of F-911. It is perfectly legal to make copies for your own personal use though no matter what the studio thinks.

I doubt Moore has any say on the issue at all.

2. I'm looking at it right now and there is no warning before
the movie about illegal distribution.

13. I don;t have my copy with me but
I swear there was a warning at the head. Are you sure? I'll check mine when I get home.

In any case the CSS is enough of a warning right there. They don't want it copied, and apparently thanks to the DCMA you can't make a legal copy no matter what anyone says.

7. No, it is NOT perfectly legal!!!
"It is perfectly legal to make copies for your own personal use though no matter what the studio thinks." WRONG!!!!!! NOT perfectly legal to make copies of copyrighted materials for "personal use". READ the law. Easily accessible on line. Search Copyright law and read it.

The question is WHO does hold the copyright.

They copyright holder can grant you such permission. WHO holds the copyright on this movie? If it's MM and he has granted permission, abide EXACTLY by the permission guidelines!

Pleeeze do not perpetuate incorrect interpretations of copyright law, I have to fight it all the time.

9. Actually it turns out you are right,
But for the wrong reasons. It is perfectly acceptable to copy movies for your own personal use. But suprise it is not legal to defeat the CSS encryption thanks to the DMCA.

It has nothing to do with who holds the copyright.

although on appeal we may have that right restored.

20. The article you site doesn't relate to the issue.
But you are correct, one can make a copy for personal use, providing one has legitimately obtained (bought) the original. One cannot make copies for friends.

If Michael Moore is the copyright holder and says ya can download it and make copies for your friends, then that is all the permission you need. (I assume he hasn't sold his copy rights to the distributor.)

I simply don't want people to think they can copy stuff for personal use without having legitimately purchased the original, and cannot give copies to friends, without express permission from the copyright holder.

Boring, but it's law.

28. you misread his post
...plus CSS encryption so I think they would take a dim view of DISTRIBUTING copies of F-911. It is perfectly legal to make copies for your own personal use though no matter what the studio thinks.

He's obviously talking from the point of view of someone who already owns the movie. Why else would he emphasize that distribution is illegal, but copying for personal use is not? He's quite plainly stating that it's legal to copy your own movie, but it's illegal for you to then give that copy to somebody else, and in that he's correct.

3. I heard him say somewhere
that he didn't care that he wanted to get it out as quickly as possible and to a maximum audience before the election....

SOME SAY....that they are making a copy of their original for personal use and odnating the original to the local library or passing to friends as much as possible

i am surprised at how many friends see it and become active bush haters....

long as you don't sell them.

6. Moore talked about it Gainesville last week
He said he does not mind people copying and/or sharing the DVD as long as they are not making money from doing it.

His attitude is that once you put your work into a digital format, it's like putting your couch out next to the dumpster. At that point it's out there for someone to take.

14. Problem is, he sold the copyright to Disney/Miramax/Fellowship of whatever
so he doesn't have the power to grant that kind of license.

He's just telling you it doesn't bother him personally. That's a different question than, "will I be breaking the law if I do this?"

24. That's a hoax
posted at DENOUNCE are not real: they're fake news, posted as satire, parody, humor, or plausible outcomes. Over the past 48 hours, links have been going out all over the world to people who are finding this story and treating it as if it were real. It's not. It was never published as being real

10. What's the policy for free public showings?
Suppose someone wanted to camp out with an InFocus projector next to their local Sinclair broadcasting affilliate, and project F9/11 on the walls for a group of like-minded citizens...

15. That is usually covered specifically in the FBI warning
something like "No public exhibitions..." although I can't vouch that that exact verbage appears on F-911's warning but I would expect it to.

If Moore is involved in the showing, no one's going to take any kind of "action."

18. Yeah, that's one distinction between
what is technically legal and what you could get away with. You could get away with most anything discussed on this thread.

The MPAA is going to go after the biggest players they can find, people who try and resell or rent the DVD's or people who charge for showings and people who upload to the internet (especially high quality).

They have not yet gone RIAA on us and started suing the pants off of 14 year old girls yet.

19. What if you have a public access channel for
2 hours and the program consisted of a show about a guy who was watching F 9/11....you could film over his should and film the guys reactions and comments...the F 9/11 aspect would be incidental....not necessarily a public presentation...you are presenting a film of a guy watching it only...

21. Exactly, you'd have a guy and two robot puppets making wisecracks
Fahrenheit 9/11: As Bush sat in that Florida classroom, was he wondering if maybe he should have shown up to work more often? Should he have held at least one meeting since taking office to discuss the threat of terrorism with his head of counterterrorism?"

Joel: No, he should have ordered out for pizza and asked for a widescreen TV!

Crow: The Secret Service doesn't let him eat pizza.

Tomservo: It's for his own safety. They left him alone with a pretzel, and it nearly killed him.

Joel: What does he eat?

Tomservo: You know, the kinds of things all bushes eat.

Crow: Sunlight, fertilizer, water molecules pulled up from his taproots.

etcetera

30. DVD X-Copy Gold
I bought F911 at Best Buy Tuesday. I then burned it and gave a couple copies out to the folks at my work. DVD X-Copy Gold is the software you will need to make direct, easy copies without that copy right protection crap.

Also Moore said to steal his latest book of letters from the soldiers if it was necessary!! I love the guy!
