Gephardt campaign dissing Iowans that want to volunteer
I ran into someone while hanging out in Davenport and Dubuque, Iowa who supports Gephardt, but is moving toward Kerry. Her reasons are not so much that she's strongly converting, but because the Gephardt campaign has laid down some stupid rule about canvassing, etc.

She owns a Honda. Apparently, she would not be able to use her car because it's a foreign-made product. They didn't even want her to drive it into the campaign building parking lot.

She pointed out that nearly every car in the parking lot had at least something in the engine, chassis or interior that has something produced from a foreign country. She also said that there were many that were turned away due to this policy.

It seems to me that the Gephardt campaign could use all the help they could get and not turn down someone because of such an inane policy.

I wonder what computers the Gephardt campaign uses...

Chevrolets, Fords, and Saturns allowed. :eyes:

I hope this isn't true, because that's inane.

7. All electronics used in these cars are American-made?
I doubt it.

11. Probably not...
Also, considering there are few American car manufacturers, the Gep campaign would potentially be turning away the majority of people who want to volunteer..

16. Does Bush know
that you stole his favorite toy?

He shakes that thing three times, and then adds up his favorite colors.

If it's less than 2, he gives a corporate tax break.

If it's between 2 and 5, he attacks a country.

If it's higher than 5, he gives another billion to Halliburton.

8. on a somewhat similar note
Dennis refuses to get into a foreign-made car. (But he certainly hasn't dissauded volunteers with Japanese or German cars from canvassing on his behalf.) He is also very picky about hotels. Only if the workers are organized will he deign to stay the night.

10. The hotel bit is perfectly understandable and quite principled.
No comment on the foreign-made car issue.

12. What about listening to the radio?

Does DK watch TV?

Would he use a German-made microphone in a debate? Most TV stations use Sennheiser mics.

13. What's a foreign car these days, anyways?
Many cars by "US" automakers are made in Mexico. Some Japanese automakers' make cars in U.S. Not to mention the whole multi-national conglomerate thing...

22. Many japanese cars are made in the us
Maybe it is run by someone in Japan but it employs us workers to build it. Dumb policy. I bet they shop at wal mart, too.

25. as are many "German" cars
Those are produced in Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, ... as well.

On the other hand: some Chryslers are build in Germany.

24. It sounds like there's been a misunderstanding
Dick won't travel in a foreign-made car. Wherever he goes, he uses domestic cars. However, I don't think there's a rule that staffers/supporters can't drive foreign cars.

26. Seems like a well-meaning, woefully misguided policy.
If you drive a car, chances are that very little of it was actually built in America. Gephardt's campaign seems to be asking for the impossible.

American car companies aren't even American any more. They are of the world now. Globalization has its faults, but it cannot be denied.

27. you took the words out of my mouth
This "American" car only policy may have made sense 20 years ago.

Now, Fords are made in Mexico, GM in Canada, VW in Brazil, and Honda in the US.

Hell, Toyota is building its next truck factory in San Antonio.
