Jules Naudet's ear wire
http://tinyurl.com/7tr6j
That's Jules Naudet (blowing dust off his own camera lens on the morning of 9/11) with a WIRE going into his ear. Excerpted from the dvd of the Naudet-FDNY mock-you-drama.

I wonder who would have been talking to him if not his brother Gedeon. Remember, a major subplot of the movie is the separation anxiety. Each brother allegedly thought the other had died. Which also seems to imply that we're supposed to think these guys are the only documentarians in New York who work without cell phones.

2. Or he could just be monitoring the audio coming out of his camera.
Like every videographer does.

3. Oh. Hunh?
What audio coming OUT of his camera? What kind of videocam even lets you adjust the recording volume at all? And what videography experience do you have, to be speaking for all videographers?

The same sounds going INTO the camera go into the cameraman's ears. If you want to hear what's right there around you, you don't need an earpiece. But you do if you're taking direction, or if your brother is staying in touch with you while he's filming elsewhere. Amitting that's what it was used for would prove the Separation Anxiety subplot is a lie, though.

4. The Sony DSR-250 Digital Camcorder
It lets you adjust the audio input volumes and also has a headphone output.

Get the manual here: DSR-250_Operating_Instructions

Pertinent details:

Adjusting the recording level manually - Sound recording level

You can adjust the recording sound level. We recommend that you check the recording level before recording. You can adjust the channel 1 and channel 2 separately.

page 54

There is also a drawing of the location of the audio level controls on that page.

Specifications

PHONES
Stereo minijack (ø 3.5 mm)

page 176

There is a drawing with the location of the PHONES jack on p. 181.

Some people like to know if the camera's electronics are actually picking up the sound correctly. They want to be sure that the audio can be heard clearly, without weird noises or distortion.

A microphone does not pick up sound like a human ear. If someone plans on using the audio being recorded when shooting the video, they must be certain that it is being recorded properly. Hence the PHONES jack.

5. The Canon XL1 also
That's the camera I regularly use, and it is definitely recommended that you use earphones to monitor the sound as you record.

6. The JVC GY-HD100/GY-HD101 as well.
Adjusting the audio input level control

The audio input level can be adjusted manually when the GYHD100
is in the record, record-standby or stop mode.
  1. Set the CH-1/CH-2 AUDIO SELECT switch of the channel whose audio level that you want to adjust manually to MANUAL.
  2. Rotate the audio input level control corresponding to the audio input level to be adjusted.
       • Adjust so that the peak level does not exceed the –3 dB point when a loud sound is input.
pdf page 50

Monitoring Audio during Recording
The audio input during recording, in record-pause or stop mode can be monitored through the monitoring speaker or earphone.

• Select the audio channel to be monitored using the MONITOR SELECT switch.

CH-1 : The sound input to the CH-1 channel is output.
BOTH : The sound input to the CH-1 and CH-2 channels is output mixed.
CH-2 : The sound input to the CH-2 channel is output.

• The MONITOR volume control adjusts the monitoring volume.
• The loudspeaker or earphone outputs an alarm tone in the case of an abnormal condition occurring in the unit. An alarm tone is also output when the tape end is reached or when the battery is running down.

7. Looks like a Sony PD150
from the pictures I've seen of the Naudets. It has professional recording controls and inputs.
But regardless, lots of cameras have audio controls.
You would want to monitor audio if you to make sure your levels were good
even if you were just recording natural sound.

"what videography experience do you have, to be speaking for all videographers?"

Ten years. In that time I've use an ear piece many times to monitor audio for live events.
Not all the time, sometimes I used phones but many times I've used an ear piece so I can better hear
what's going on around me.

10. I agree with pauldp, it looks like a DSR-PD150.
The following sentence from this german_site seems to confirm that: "Ihre Dokumentation drehten die Brüder Naudet mit Sony DSR-PD150 Digitalkameras".

Here's a link to the operating instructions document: DSR-PD150

The manual audio adjustment procedure is on page 52, the specification for the "Headphones jack" is on page 160, and the location of the headphone jack is on page 166.

BTW - I'm more of a sound guy.
