Three to six thousand Cruise Missiles overhead now
Edited on Sat Nov-19-05 10:38 AM by aztc
by Tim Castleman

At any given moment there are about 3000 jet aircraft hurtling along at nearly 600 MPH carrying several tons of explosive fuel and around one hundred or more passengers. On holidays the number doubles to 6000 potential Weapons of Mass Destruction blasting in and out of the very heart of our population centers hundreds of times per day.

All it takes is a few dedicated individuals, or even just one person with nothing left to lose, well who has not seen the potential for devastation worldwide on color TV from the events of 9/11/01?

This industry that serves less than 1% of the public each day consumes tens of billions of taxpayer dollars in the form of subsidies, tax relief, grants, and political favor. How many tens of billions? It is hard to calculate the total because of the cozy relationship to the defense industry. The very same companies that build, maintain and profit from passenger aircraft also build bombs and weapons to wage war from the air, raining death and destruction from 30,000 feet. The crossover into space should not be forgotten, and all of the related industries and jobs that result from all this technological ingenuity that always needs an enemy to destroy.

But wait! It gets even more disgusting when we come face to face with the reality that it is the average American who likes jet air travel so much that they are willing to ignore this reality of the most energy intensive, polluting, hazardous way to travel ever devised.

Even the most vocal and active ecological preservation groups are consumers, even promoters, of jet air travel. None has taken this particular bull by the horns. In fact, the few who have dared to propose real conservation are rejected and marginalized by the very organizations blowing their horn the loudest.

Meanwhile, since 9/11, over 10,000 more pedestrians have been killed and tens of thousands have been struck and maimed by cars and trucks for the crime of walking or riding a bike. The national passenger rail system is in shambles due to neglect, under funding and outright sabotage by corrupt politicians made wealthy by the auto, defense and petroleum industries. It is embarrassing that the nation that sent a man to the moon decades ago cannot get a passenger train over the grapevine from Bakersfield to Los Angeles and you cannot take a train from Los Angeles to Phoenix because none stop there anymore.

The MISSION of the PEACE TRAIN to DC is to deliver a message of PEACE THROUGH CONSERVATION to the WORLD.

The MISSION of the Drive 55 Conservation Project is to reduce petroleum consumption by 20%-50%.

1. I'm not going to take it anymore
Edited on Sat Nov-19-05 10:51 AM by LARED
Next time I go to California from New Jersey, I'm taking a cow.

No pollution, (expect the dung, convertible into heat after drying). I will not kill any pedestrians or maim others in different mode of transportation, and best of all if the beast dies along the way I can cook some burgers over the dung I've been drying.

BTW I'm all for fuel conservation, it just articles like the one you posted are just plain stupid.

4. Good, first comes anger...
Then, honesty, the recovery from an addiction that is killing us all.

6. A Cow seats 4 people!
A whole cow for yourself. How selfish. At least pick up hitchhikers!

10. Who said give it up?
Just knock off the gluttony --- the figures should be pigs with m-16's, but the Ronald McDonald shadows are cute too.

9. Stop buying jet aircraft tickets
Walk, ride a bike, ride a bus, ride in a car, ride the train, ride a horse, whatever, just STOP funding the military industrial complex and the petroleum warlords that run it.

11. I would love to be able to take a train to California from NYC.
Unfortunately for unknown reason the USA hates the idea of supplying a viable train system.
I always marvel at riding the bullet trains in Japan where I can travel from Tokyo to Osaka in just a little more time than it takes to fly (and actually less time when you factor in all the attendant bullshit that goes along with flying).
It seems that once you get West of Pennsylvania you'd be able to run trains at 250/300mph. through the Great Plains.
But no! I guess this all ties into the mentality that eliminated all viable mass transportation in Detroit when I was a child (BTW they sold the trolley cars to Mexico city where they continued to operate for years). We all have to have our own car, and that means each and every member of the family. OY!

12. The logic is perverse, but it's there...
Where better to find a positive response to something this silly and unrealistic than the 9/11 Forum?

I'm assuming that was your intention?

13. You do have to admire him for this:
He managed to annoy BOTH sides of the debates in this forum...

P.S. If really want a laugh, check out his post in the Environment/Energy forum on Sulfur output from passenger jets... then check out this chart to see just how "much" Sulfur Dioxide his idealized ban on jet travel would remove...

14. I recommended the thread for the greatest page.
You're right. It's damn difficult to alienate almost everybody on the 9/11 Forum. He's managed to do just that.
