Do you think intelligence agencies monitor DU?
Edited on Sun Jun-20-10 12:58 AM by BrentWil
Just curious. Do you think DU is monitored by intelligence agencies?

Please provide your logic for what makes you think so or what makes you think they do not. If you answer yes, then what are they looking for, how do they use the information, and how important is it for them to monitor DU?

Pentagon revives Rumsfeld-era domestic spying unit

The Pentagon's spy unit has quietly begun to rebuild a database for tracking potential terrorist threats that was shut down after it emerged that it had been collecting information on American anti-war activists.

The Defense Intelligence Agency filed notice this week that it plans to create a new section called Foreign Intelligence and Counterintelligence Operation Records, whose purpose will be to "document intelligence, counterintelligence, counterterrorism and counternarcotic operations relating to the protection of national security."

But while the unit's name refers to "foreign intelligence," civil liberties advocates and the Pentagon's own description of the program suggest that Americans will likely be included in the new database.

FICOR replaces a program called Talon, which the DIA created in 2002 under then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as part of the counterterrorism efforts following the 9/11 attacks. It was disbanded in 2007 after it emerged that Talon had retained information on anti-war protesters, including Quakers, even after it was determined they posed no threat to national security.

23. Sorry, worrying about being "monitored" bespeaks an enormously inflated sense of self-importance.
Sure, the FBI and whoever else have their "Carnivore" programs crawling through the internet watching for certain key words, but thinking that DU in particular is being watched is just silly.

There might be particular politically involved DUers who have individually attracted scrutiny because of real life activity, not because of their postings on DU.

In any case, I can't think of any reason to give a fuck one way or another. I really detest paranoia.

He signed up in 2004. The way the old DU legend has it, he was able to start a thread even though he had no previous posts. He said something like "Watch what you say here, or you'll be dealing with me". Then the thread was locked. The mods and admin said they hadn't locked the thread. Then they they tried to tombstone him, but the profile won't go away.

Very mysterious!

I am confident that a multitude of agents are on the internet, even forming forums and providing opinion leaders on both sides and plenty of confusion.

Soft but effective operations in manipulating the body politic.

The reason is to prepare for future battlefields or to mold current opinion. Battlefields may be social, political. and a variety of colors including violent military attacks. The WOT and WOD needed to be invented and memed because otherwise there would be no enemy and our violence sometimes intentionally arbitrary is greater than we ever learn.

The imperial nature of the USA is history.

Welcome to the 21st Century; religious and economic and racial fundamentalism mixed with near instantaneous and ubiquitous electronic communication.

Skinner or one of the other higher up admins can confirm, but your ISP tools generally have a way for you to see from what URLs people visit.

When I ran a small political website, I saw a lot of FBI.gov and various .mil and other governmental agencies in the "visit" log. Mind you, we did not post crazy stuff on it. You can still see the content if you do a search on "The Dumbya Chronicles"

54. One word.. Steganography..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steganography

Steganography is the art and science of writing hidden messages in such a way that no one, apart from the sender and intended recipient, suspects the existence of the message, a form of security through obscurity. The word steganography is of Greek origin and means "concealed writing" from the Greek words steganos (στεγανός ;) meaning "covered or protected", and graphein (γράφειν ;) meaning "to write". The first recorded use of the term was in 1499 by Johannes Trithemius in his Steganographia, a treatise on cryptography and steganography disguised as a book on magic. Generally, messages will appear to be something else: images, articles, shopping lists, or some other covertext and, classically, the hidden message may be in invisible ink between the visible lines of a private letter.

The advantage of steganography, over cryptography alone, is that messages do not attract attention to themselves. Plainly visible encrypted messagesno matter how unbreakablewill arouse suspicion, and may in themselves be incriminating in countries where encryption is illegal.<1> Therefore, whereas cryptography protects the contents of a message, steganography can be said to protect both messages and communicating parties.

Steganography includes the concealment of information within computer files. In digital steganography, electronic communications may include steganographic coding inside of a transport layer, such as a document file, image file, program or protocol. Media files are ideal for steganographic transmission because of their large size. As a simple example, a sender might start with an innocuous image file and adjust the color of every 100th pixel to correspond to a letter in the alphabet, a change so subtle that someone not specifically looking for it is unlikely to notice it.

58. Yes I do ....
My husband and I had a peace blog opposing the war in Iraq while Bush was president. We had a site meter which told us who visited the blog, where they were and what time zone they were in. We had visitors from the CIA, DOJ, State Department, Army Intelligence in Virgina (which Obama plans to reopen), Halliburton and KBR. I printed screen caps of the site meter information and my husband made bitmaps which we posted on the blog. Then I answered each and every one and linked the blog with an explanation to Liberal talk forums so that they could see too. Other bloggers had similar experiences. We talked to each other because we were all we had. One blogger got an answer from his CIA visitor attempting to intimidate him from continuing. He posted the email. Then he responded and we all sent replies for him to post with his.

They were I suppose, looking to see who was dissenting and trying to scare them into silence. DU was one of the forums I linked to, and many DUers came over for a look and wrote responses for me to post. I was a regular poster here then too until my MS got so bad I could no longer function well anywhere. So my husband and I closed our blog, with apologies to our fellow bloggers and I had to silently leave DU. I returned here about the time Obama was elected.

I don't think it is important to monitor dissent. It is unconstitutional. If the monitoring is done with good intent maybe they keep a survey of opinions to see how their actions are viewed and how to conduct themselves to pull themselves out of the mud when they are deep into it. I have long ago become cynical about this administration. The lies, the broken promises, the continuation of the wars and the worst of the Bush war polices, the lack of promised transparency and the lack of adequate response or asserting of proper authority over the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The trashing of our economy and the failure to provide jobs or promised relief. Make of it what you will. I still have copies of those screen caps though I no longer have any way to post to the internet. I show them to people who doubt that tyranny and injustice can live and flourish in this country.

75. Yes, and there are likely posters from many of them.
Workers in government, assigned to do so or not, likely visit here, join here, and try to move discussions the way they favor. One only has to observe the way some posters seem tasked to push certain memes to draw this conclusion. I can think of several topics that trigger immediate appearances by certain posters, who immediately start a well organized attack on some conversation being had here.

Do military members come here and post while on govt computers, on duty? Sure.

Do federal govt law enforcement agencies do likewise? Almost certainly.

Why wouldn't they? They're humans, and more than most humans, they like snooping in the lives of others. They use subterfuge and misdirection as part of their work. Why wouldn't they show up here, Kos and other active political forums that address topics important to their agency?

107. Do you think the Red Squad used to place agents in the tiniest of Communist cells?
Did the FBI (still headquartered at the Hoover Building!) once provide most of the subscribers to the Daily Worker? Monitoring political communities on the Web is very easy by comparison, it's easier to spoof web personas and IPs than play real-live leftists. Federal and local police forces have only grown since those days. It's no secret from recent stories that the FBI infiltrates political groups and seeks to pull stings and, actually, frames. Or that the NSA program set up already before 9/11 is spying massively on the entire phone and Web system. Or that a state of emergency was declared after 9/11 that continues today, along with a "war on terror" in which the enemy is amorphous and could be anywhere (which has now changed names but little in the substance). We're constantly told that every institution and infrastructure is vulnerable and full of weak points that must be protected. Homeland, police and security budgets are in the hundreds of billions and much of their focus is chickenshit idiocy like drugs and who's going to the RNC. Government agencies set ideological agendas and go forth trolling for information and no doubt planting it, the same way PR workers for corporations and political parties monitor and place talking points. How this all manifests on this Web site, as opposed to another, is anyone's guess. Or maybe Agent Mike will tell us?
