Steele: Republicans Are Making a Comeback

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – If Michael W. Steele, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, declares that the Republican Party has turned a corner, does that make it so?
That question is about to be tested now that Mr. Steele made just that declaration in a buck-up, cheer-up speech to Republican National Committee members here on Tuesday. His speech came at a time when poll after poll shows public support for the Republican party dropping, and when the party has suffered a series of setbacks – including a loss of an upstate special election for a Congressional seat in a Republican district that Mr. Steele had proclaimed as a top target for his party the last time the committee met.
Nonetheless, for 30 minutes, he told party members that things had changed, and that a new chapter had begun for Republicans and their chairman ...
