A former state senator who has questioned the government's role in the 9/11 terrorist attacks and once proposed that Arizona secede from the United States has filed paperwork exploring a run for governor in the 2010 general election.

Karen Johnson, a Republican who served first in the state House and later the Senate between 1997 and 2008, has been out of office less than a year. But Johnson, now living in Show Low, said she's considering a return to public office to combat what she called the federal government's recent assault on "freedoms and liberties."
