Real time irc chat anyone?
Don't know if anyone is around or interested.

If you have an irc client, I've made a temporary room and will sit there for a while if anyone wants to join. Details are:

Server: irc.openirc.net port 6667
Room: #DU911

1. Shameless kick!
To all you regulars - both pro and anti MIHOP. A little real time chat may make us more human to the others. Come on - give it a try.

3. Like a scout, always prepared lol
Go here
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=mirc

download Mirc version 4.1 which i think is last free version. Install and have a fiddle with it. Somewhere you will find a connect window. There is generally a preconfigured list of servers, but over-ride that and connect to:

irc.openirc.net port 6667 (I haven't used mirc for a while so you may need to type it like irc.openirc.net:6667, or you may have a seperate box for port number.)

When you have connected to the server, in the command line type /join #DU911 you can copy an paste this.

Good luck. See you there mate

4. To the mods
hope you don't think I am trying to hijack the 911 forum or anything. Please let me know if you do not approve of posting an invitation to real time chat.

My thinking is that getting to know other posters to this forum may relieve some of the tension that abound. Despite all the bitchy posting that goes on, I reckon there is a bloody interesting group of people here and this may be a way to get to know each other a little better.

Thank you.

14. Nice thought,
but I had IRC many years ago and while it was fun, it also proved to be a welcome mat for hackers and viruses and such so I haven't used it for several years.

Maybe (and hopefully) it's improved since then, but you know how it goes. Once bitten, twice shy and all that.

I love the idea, but I don't trust the venue, sorry.

16. Thou knowest not of which thou speaketh
Irc could possibly be a backdoor to your computer if you indiscriminately accepteth dcc without knowing from whence it cometh.
I think it is a rather broad brush approach to condemn a section of the internet (NOT the web, with which you seemeth familiar)because you are inexperienced in keeping your own computer tight.

Maybe the irc protocol has 'improved since then', I have no way of knowing, and I bet you don't either. Jazz, run a firewall, check your computer regularly for bugs and trojans and stop living in fear. I say this lovingly, possum. Don't force us on to MSM to chat with your good self in real time.

As many a wise woman sayeth, you darlz, are the one missing out.

21. Oh, my... who are you and what have you done with Dame Edna?

That aside, I just looked up this thread belatedly because I remembered it and it just occurred to me to ask this: can you utilize audio and video with IRC these days?

If so, and if it means being able to talk to you and hope2006 and mirandapriestly (and whoever else might wish to join in) live with audio and video, I'll be happy to take the risk that I would not otherwise have taken in light of my past experience with IRC.

Back then, there was no audio or video, of course. Now, there is audio and video capability among various programs with which I am well acquainted and familiar, but I don't know about IRC.

Is that the case? If so, count me in next time you round up a group for a live chat. If it's just typing at people, meh, not so much worthwhile although I suppose it's better than the lag time of a chat board, but audio and video? Oh yes. I'm definitely in.

Let me know.

22. No AV on irc
I think you'd have to use one of the proprietary messengers for that. I'm not sure how much value that would be with more than two people connected if you consider varying connection & computer speeds.

Give irc a go! Once past the initial connection it is very handy - and certainly just as safe as MSN messenger or yahoo. There may be another chat cooked up for next weekend. Will keep you posted.

But keep me posted, just the same, Madam E. :)

(I adore the exalted D.E., btw, she cracks me up)
