"The chief military prosecutor, Brigadier General Avihai Mandelblit, instructed military police Monday to investigate the circumstances surrounding the wounding of Channel 10 cameraman, Majdi al-Arabid, by Israeli Defense Forces fire in the Gaza Strip.
Mandelblit issued his decision following a review of the routine military investigation of the incident.
Arabid, a Palestinian cameraman, was covering IDF activity in the Strip with Channel 10 reporter Shlomi Eldar in January. The two said that they were on their way to film an IDF force taking positions on a roof in the outskirts of the refugee camp of Beit Hanun.
Arabid and Eldar waved their microphone and equipment to make it clear they were journalists. But as they approached the house where the soldiers were taking positions, the soldiers fired a few shots at them. Eldar, who was a bit further away from Arabid, was not hurt by the fire.
According to Arabid, no exchange of fire was taking place between the soldiers and Palestinian gunmen when he was shot. "There were a few kids throwing rocks at tanks from afar. Then I heard a shot, fell on the floor and saw a lot of blood around me. The next time I opened my eyes I was in the hospital," said Arabid."
