Muslim leaders leave Israel event
Two leaders in the Stanford Muslim community walked out of a discussion hosted at the Harold and Libby Ziff Center for Jewish Campus Life Monday after a heated conversation about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Three employees of the worldwide organization Israel at Heart, a group that educates college students about life in Israel, discussed their experiences in and perspectives on the Middle Eastern country where they have lived for several years.

Merav Mov is a 23-year-old woman who served in the Israeli National Guard; Shlomit Aylin, also 23, immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia at age three; and Eytan Schwartz, a 30-year-old game show winner. The three spoke on both the major social and political issues in Israel today, as well as what Judaism means to each of them personally.

“We want people to know about the vibrant life in Israel,” Schwartz said. “The hangouts, the sports, the nightlife, the food — people don’t know about it. We want people to understand how much we love living in Israel.”

The feud between Israelis and Palestinians came up later in the conversation. Senior Rania Eltom, president of the Muslim Students Awareness Network, and sophomore Omar Shakir, co-president of the Coalition for Justice in the Middle East, left the event following several comments that they said they found disrespectful.

3. Then you hopefully also read this
“We are here to engage in dialogue,” Schwartz said. “We are not here working for the Israeli government. We are regular people with personal experiences who just want to talk about the situation. Our goal is not to lay blame or distort facts. It is to promote peace.”

4. And I have noooo doubt you also read this....
Freshman Roei Kashi, who organized the event, said that it is hard to accomplish any of these goals without good communication.

“It’s hard to talk about these issues,” he said. “There are emotions involved and I understand that. However, I think we should be able to discuss them; nothing is accomplished when no one is willing to talk about it. I feel like this was an example of how I never have a partner to speak to about the conflict because no one is willing to listen to the other side.”

Good guy.

5. I called my cousin
who teaches in the Medical School at Stanford, and his wife, who works at Stanford, and his son who is a pre-med at Stanford. The son attended. He does not recall the basis for the statements

"However, when we entered the event, it was made very obvious that we were outsiders. As soon as the speakers started generalizing Palestinians as wanting to kill all soldiers, it hit a nerve within me, especially one day after three Palestinian school kids were shot dead by Israeli soldiers.”

Eltom added that she was very offended when the speakers talked about how suicide bombers are glorified in Palestinian classrooms."

Nor does he recall any statements of the type--

    1. "speakers started generalizing Palestinians as wanting to kill all soldiers"

    2. "the speakers talked about how suicide bombers are glorified in Palestinian classrooms."

Realize, the Stanford Daily reporter, Laura Carwile, did not say that the speakers made these remarks -- she said that the Arab students said that the speakers said this.

Second hand hearsay.

Your response to me "Well Coastie, you weren't there - third hand hearsay."

It's a script Newyorican, we are players on a stage - acting out our roles as we have been pre-programmed to do.

6. Notice also......
Shakir said he was also upset by the atmosphere at the discussion.

“I walked into this event to gain insight and because I was curious to learn more about the topic of Israeli life,” he said. “But I left the event because I felt disrespected and insulted at the fact that the first thing I saw as I walked into the Ziff Center was a flyer showing that three out of the first four events in Hillel’s programming for the quarter involves blasting the Islamic faith.”

Not the "Israel at Heart" program.

Careful Coastie or YOU too will be accused of misrepresenting the article.

7. Palestinian school kids were shot ....
"“I was requested to attend the event by organizers the day before, so I came out of respect for them,” Eltom said. “However, when we entered the event, it was made very obvious that we were outsiders. As soon as the speakers started generalizing Palestinians as wanting to kill all soldiers, it hit a nerve within me, especially one day after three Palestinian school kids were shot dead by Israeli soldiers.”

10. Then heads up.........LA Jews barraged with hate mail in recent weeks
Dozens of Jewish residents, businesses and synagogues in the Los Angeles area have been barraged by hate mail in recent weeks.

The FBI, US Postal Service and Los Angeles police are investigating the large manila envelopes, some of which had "Die Jews Die" scrawled on the outside.

"We want to reassure the community that the letters are part of a series of mass mailings and do not seem to be targeting anyone individually," Amanda Susskind, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, was quoted by The Associated Press as saying.
