Sharon orders army to crush militants, says Abbas not lifting a finger
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) gave his army orders Sunday to crush militants in the Gaza Strip (news - web sites) and accused new Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas of failing to lift a finger to stop attacks.

"The current situation is unacceptable and cannot be allowed to continue," Sharon said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.

"The Tsahal (army) and the security forces have received orders to operate without any limits on time or their modus operandi to act against the terrorist organisations.

"These instructions will remain valid as long as the Palestinians fail to lift even a single finger" against the armed factions, he added.

The order is further proof that Sharon has already lost his patience with Abbas, who was only sworn in as Palestinian leader on Saturday, over his failure to bring factions such as radical Islamist movement Hamas to heel.

2. More on abbas giving the finger.....
the same abu mazen who....

called terrorists "not criminal"

called terrorists "honorable"

called israel that "zionist enemy"

refused to even consider confronting terrorism

called on unconditional ROR.

demanding the release of all prisoners no matter if they have murdered innocents

demanding jerusalem as the exclusive capital of palestine

calling a stop to terrorists attacks....not because they are wrong (abbas has no problem with them on moral grounds)...no ...he just thinks they are not useful right now.

stated terrorists needed to be "protected".

great guy.

6. Gee....
do you think him saying terrorists needed "protection" and were "freedom-fighters" might have given these terrorists the impression they can get away with this without repercussions??

Exactly how many attacks and/or dead jews would there have to be before you are satisfied that israel should respond?

Not to worry....there will be the usual hand-wringing over "cycle of violence" within a day or two and the state department spokesman should issue the usual 'Israel should keep in mind the consequences of its actions' in a week or so.

8. well ....
"do you think him saying terrorists needed "protection" and were "freedom-fighters" might have given these terrorists the impression they can get away with this without repercussions??"

no, to Hamas and Hezbolla, It wouldn't matter what he said.
do you honestly think if Abbas said they should stop, they
would ??

"Exactly how many attacks and/or dead Jews would there have to be before you are satisfied that Israel should respond?"

I expect them to respond to every attack. Its how they respond
thats the problem.

If a terrorist was hiding in YOUR neighborhood and I flew over
in a F-16 and dropped a 500 lb bomb and killed 14 women and children,
then bulldozed 10 houses down (including yours) would that
be cool ???

and heres a question for you

Exactly how many attacks and/or dead Palestinians would there have to be before you are satisfied that Palestinians should respond with
screw it these clowns don't want peace ?

19. the FACTS ON THE GROUND seem to indicate that Sharon and his ACTIONS
have been a complete FAILURE in bringing peace and prosperity to the region... maybe they need new leadership

how much violence and death have occurred during his reign?

20. Wha?? More FACTS ON THE GROUND?!?!
have been a complete FAILURE in bringing peace and prosperity to the region... maybe they need new leadership

fortunately you can say these things without worrying about a kassam rocket ripping your body to shreads and i suspect what they really need is a peace partner who will control those "freedom-fighting" terrorists.

how much violence and death have occurred during his reign?

and you want to blame whom??

I'm not sure I can take anymore FACTS ON THE GROUND.

13. this could all be, for show
Sharon, needs {for Israeli political reasons}
to appear to demand that the Palis'
crack down on terrorism.
...
This is my opinion.
Instead of demanding 'security' from the Palis',
the world should try to arrange for beginnings of
a functionl gov't, on the West Bank.

16. Is it too soon to point out that nothing is changed with Arafat gone?
Wasn't Yassir supposed to be the obstacle to peace and all that?

18. Well, I was thinking about both sides of the conflict.
But then, nothing is changed there either.

On the whole I would say Mr. Abbas has been somewhat more
conciliatory than Arafat, but then he seems to be a bit
smarter than Yassir.

21. Mistake
I consider myself pretty pro-Israel - a Labour supporter who can put up with Sharon. But I'm not sure where Sharon is going with the current rhetoric, particularly in light of Abbas' promise yesterday to use security forces to crack down on the terrorists. I think Sharon would have been smarter to tone it down and say - "We appreciate your words, we'll wait to see your actions" and then actually do just that.

I suspect he's speaking to another audience, maybe his right wing flank. But I thought his comments from two days ago were enough and delaying a massive military action for a few days to see what Abbas does is not unreasonable.

23. So we should let Hamas dictate Israel's actions?
We may not trust Abbas, but Israel's security situation is not going to appreciably change by pausing for a few days. Israel's intelligence services are in a position to know whether we're being snowed or not. Abbas should be given the opportunity to prove the skeptics wrong. In a few weeks, an assessment can be made to see whether it's lip service or a real effort to take charge.

this is "put up or shut up" time for abbas.

I agree...lets give him an opportunity to see what hes got.
We will know soon if this is the real thing.
