Fatah calls on Hamas to halt Qassam rocket attacks

The Fatah Central Committee on Wednesday called on the Hamas to stop firing rockets into Israel and to cease the incitement against Mahmoud Abbas, the Fatah candidate in the upcoming Palestinian Authority elections.

According to Palestinian sources, senior Fatah officials in the Gaza Strip held an emergency meeting Wednesday in which they approved a series of steps against the Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

In an official announcement, the committee said the rocket attacks provide an excuse for continued Israel Defense Forces activity in the area.

"Israel is carrying out acts of massacre and crimes based on various excuses, among them the armed struggle by the Palestinian organizations in the Al-Aqsa Intifada," the announcement read.

Palestinian militants have stepped up rocket and mortar attacks on Israeli towns and military installations in recent weeks.
