TV cameraman shot by Israeli army
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big News Network.com Monday 3rd January, 2005

Israeli army soldiers opened fire on a cameraman working for Israel's Channel 10 on Sunday, seriously wounding him.

Channel 10 reporter Shlomi Eldar said soldiers started firing hitting cameraman Majdi al-Irbid in the stomach and in the leg. Eldar and al-Irbid had been approaching a building occupied by Idraeli soldiers. The shots came from the roof said the reporter, adding that the attack was unprovoked, and that no warning shots were fired.

Al-Irbid, a Palestinian, had been working for Channel 10 for sometime. He is in serious condition in the trauma center at Be'er Shev hospital.

Being a cameraman in Israel is dangerous to your health!!!

12. I think the IDF specializes in shooting unarmed civilians
with a sub-specialty in children.

Thugs & sadists & they wonder why they send suicide bombers.

24. Killing based upon religion is a difficult task
Actually, you mean to say that you were unaware that the IDF doesn't like Israeli Journalists too. The problem is that it is difficult to identify one's religion if they don't display it with a banner.

2. the US has targeted journalists in Iraq as well
I think about a dozen have been killed there in the current war. I don't think all were intentional, but some were.

18. Uhh, "combat zones" aren't aiming the weapons
Soldiers under the authority of their commanding officers are doing the murders.

4. Sadly he hasn't been the only cameraman killed unprovoked by the Israeli
army. I remember watching an HBO special aoubt a female investigative journalist doing researching in a palestinian town, just as they were getting ready to leave they approached an Israeli army position, and they shot her cameraman outright.

5. You Bet,...I see these guys/Gals running around during the...
...shooting with their cameras and I always think: WTF?...Me do that?..You gotta' be kidding. I'm surprised that more reporters aren't killed.

Now..I think about it, there was a famous film that was found (beside a dead reporter) during the Vietnam conflict that showed the flash of a rifle and the camera being dropped from the reporters hands...rather spooky.

Aren't all males required to serve? Surely there are some good people in Israel.

Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 01:35 AM by Annus Horribilis
I have. I have many friends who served in the IDF. And much like our own soldiers, 95% are good people. Every single person (females included) are required to serve in some way. Israelis and Jews are not disgusting animals.

13. But there are a-holes in every country, look at us. Look at the soldiers
who tortured Iraqi prisoners. I would say they were scum. You got trigger happy Israelis, just like some of our soldiers can be. You got good people and then you have idiots.

That's why we shouldn't generalize and say "Israeli soldiers are disgusting animals." In every country, military, city, etc. the VAST majority of people are good and the small minority are a-holes. That includes the people in Israel, America, Iraq, Palestine, etc.

23. Marked improvement in condition of cameraman shot by IDF
http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/spages/522488.html

<snip>

"There was marked improvement overnight in the condition of the Channel 10 cameraman critically wounded Sunday by IDF troops operating near the town of Beit Lahiya, and on Monday his wounds were no longer listed as life-threatening.

The Palestinian cameraman, Majdi al-Arabeid, was injured near the Jabilya refugee camp and the city of Beit Hanoun while covering the IDF campaign against Palestinian rocket and mortar fire in the area."

<snip>

"At the time of the shooting, al-Arabeid, a Palestinian who films for the channel in the Gaza Strip, was accompanying the station's Israeli reporter Shlomi Eldar.

The two approached a structure occupied by IDF troops and waved their equipment at the soldiers to identify themselves as journalists. The troops opened fire at them when they were 300 meters from the structure. According to Eldar, the shots fired were not warning shots meant to halt their approach, rather they were fired to hit the targets.

Al-Arabeid, a resident of the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of Gaza City, was shot in the stomach and leg, and was initially evacuated to Shifa hospital in the Gaza Strip. But doctors there were unable to stop the bleeding, and he was later transferred to Soroka Medical Center, where he remains hospitalized in the hospital's trauma center."
