Israeli Aid, Unreported
When disaster strikes anywhere in the world, Israelis can be counted on to help. So it's no surprise that within hours of the devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean, the following humanitarian missions all departed from the tiny Jewish state:

The Israeli organization Latet ('To Give') filled a jumbo jet with 18 tons of supplies.

A medical team headed by four doctors from Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital arrived in Sri Lanka on Monday night (Dec. 27), carrying medicine and baby food. The doctors specialize in rescue operations, trauma and pediatrics.

An IDF rescue team is now on its way to Sri Lanka with 80 tons of aid material, including 10,000 blankets, tents, nylon sheeting and water containers, all contributed by the IDF.

A ZAKA rescue-and-recovery team arrived in the disaster areas Monday night, armed with its specialized equipment for identifying bodies.

A Health Ministry contingent left for Thailand on Monday night to aid in rescue efforts. The group includes doctors, nurses and four members of the IDF.

Israel has also offered its assistance to India \ a search-and-rescue team from the Home Front Command, as well as consignments of food and medicine.

Yet, with the exception of UPI (as of this writing - Tues. 4pm EST), none of the major news outlets have dedicated an article to this remarkable Israeli humanitarian effort. This, despite the fact that the IDF sent all Israel-based journalists a press release Monday evening (Dec. 27), inviting them to the airport to cover the departure of one IDF group.

3. actually quite a bit..
It's senseless and stupid to be provocative in times of tragedy. No one accused Israel of being stingy, to my knowledge. But you post is only here to incite Arab- and France-bashing. And yes, this coming from a Jew.

5. The point of the article isn't to be controversial. The point
is that we hear so much about the bad stuff Israel does.

We should hear about the good stuff, too.

17. I don't think we should worry about who provides aid and who doesn't.
All of us who are blessed with life, health and happiness in this country and others that are not affected should count ourselves as the fortunate ones who have the opportunity to help our fellow men in need. This tragedy to me shows how trivial our man made differences are, be they religious, racil or anything else. Let us put them aside.

Now, please turn your attention to issues of substance: see my post re the private little war. So I won't be accused by, what, the non-liberals here?, of multiple editing, I will guess the post you might be considering is #35 .... but, it might be + or - that #.

To address your not-so-subtle slam, it is incomprehensible that any liberal would wish the tiny sliver of the ME to simply lie down and die. Tell me: is that your idea of Hitler, The Return?

19. I must thank you for getting the priorities straight...
I know now the most urgent and pressing priority out of this catastrophic disaster is to sit around and play Country A is better than Country B because they gave more money! Hell, damn that liberal media for focusing on the victims! They should be spending 24/7 praising a bunch of countries for the aid they send! Let's not forget who the real stars of the Tsunami-Show are!!

Methinks there's more than one person here who needs to let go of petty biases for at least five minutes and think about how disgusting it is to use this disaster as nothing more than a wagon to peddle their own little agendas...

Oh, and seeing yr so fascinated with the Arab states, read post 18...

16. I don't know about "unreported"
as I read about Latet on Google.

But, cudos are deserved for lending whatever can be usefully employed.

Sri Lanka did not turn down anything. They simply could not handle a group as large as 150 from Israel. They did accept a group of about 50.

18. Even though I'm a Palestinian supporter,
I have to applaud Israel's generosity in this case. We should all do so. I doubt the people affected by the tsunami care where their aid is coming from.

As for the rest Dr. Don mentioned:
Saudi Arabia: $10 million
Jordan: $12 million
Egypt: $13 million
Lebanon: $7 million
Kuwait: $8 million
France: $23 million

This was from Reuters, in a country by country breakdown of where the aid is coming from. I'd give you the link, but it seems they have already shut it down. There's also a lot of physical help coming from these countries, by way of supplies and people on the ground. If I find specifics, I'll post them.

I applaud their generosity, and I think all Israeli supporters should as well. For the tsunami, it's time for us to abandon politics and help the victims.

You are responding to a post about countries which have donated to the tsunami tragedy.

Why do you gratuitously take a shot at drdon326 by posting: "are you OUTRAGED? do you have a link to an article that expresses this outrage? maybe in the jpost"

What is that about? If you are having a private little war with another member here, how does that fit into the rules?

They might have a point about the non-reporting of Israeli aid,but only a bigoted,weird-arse fundie wingnut would use the deaths of 120,000+ to make a petty, pathetic political point about the OT.

Edited on Fri Dec-31-04 09:40 AM by lefty_mcduff
PARIS, Dec 30 (AFP) - France will provide 22.16 million euros (30.14 million dollars) in international aid for nations hit by the tsunami disaster in the Indian Ocean over the weekend, as the overall death toll rose to nearly 81,000, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.

A further 1.56 million euros in bilateral assistance was earmarked for "humanitarian aid and assistance to people" in the form of rescue and identification teams, specialists for psychological assistance, repatriations and maritime search patrols by sea and air.

Another 5.6 million euros are the French quota as part of an EU aid package, the ministry said.
