Israel Approves Expansion of Large Settlement
By Ken Ellingwood
Times Staff Writer

August 3, 2004

JERUSALEM — The government of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has approved construction of 600 homes in Maale Adumim, a large settlement outside Jerusalem, in a move that raises questions about peace negotiations.

A Defense Ministry spokeswoman on Monday confirmed a report in the Maariv newspaper that Israel planned to expand Maale Adumim — at nearly 30,000 residents, the largest settlement in the West Bank. She declined to elaborate.

The newspaper said the government gave the construction order two months ago but did not announce it, to avoid international criticism.

Under a U.S.-backed diplomatic initiative, Israel is to freeze settlement activity and remove illegal outposts — smaller offshoots of settlements — built since March 2001. The Bush administration has expressed frustration over the lack of progress in removing the outposts.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the move to build homes at Maale Adumim "appears to be incompatible with" the diplomatic plan, known as the road map.<snip>

1. OK, color me confused...
Israel has already ceded 85% of the land in their original charter (Balfour).

How much more will be enough?

I think I know the answer to that question, but I just had to type it.

The only 2 times I've had DU warnings were in this forum. I'm leaving now.

10. When so much is unknown
by reading the news reports, it's you who are trying to adjust reality, my friend.

You can second-judge the military and the government and put your vision into place. Fine. Have a heyday.

11. Try to keep up Gimel
I think you're confusing different posts in different threads.

The statement made by the poster above:

"Israel has already ceded 85% of the land in their original charter (Balfour)."

is not a matter of opinion or interpretation - it was WRONG, therefoer this poster (and yourself when you defended it) are NOT referencing memory you are referencing something that has been made up, it's called historical revisionism

The West Bank was not part of the Balfour decision or the UN Charter. You are confused indeed.

The Balfour decision only expressed an intent to create a Jewish(British Colony) in the former Turkish provence of Palestine, then under British control. This colony was to remain under British Control. The Turkish provence of Palestine didn't include the West Bank. The West bank was part of the provence of Jordan.

The UN Charter called for a homeland for the Jews where the present state of Israel is. It called for a homeland for Palestinians on the West Bank, which is the land currently being occupied. This was called "partition": and it occurred at the same time as the "partition" of India and Pakistan.

It never had any claim on the West Bank. The Israelis aren't giving up anything, but what they call a biblical mandate, which I am not oblged to accept, nor is anyone else. This mandate includes Iraq, Egypt and Lebanon if you read your bible. You are confused indeed. That sounds like the sort of propaganda Pat Robertson puts out. Do you go to a christian coalition church.

The Balfour declaration did not mention borders....

And how can you cede land that isn't yours?
