The clock will not be turned back to 1948, nor to 1880. There are now millions of Israelis, most of which were born in their own country. It exists. One solution could still be separate states, Israel and Palestine. Another could be a united state with full equality and democracy. Under the second approach, Israel would soon no longer be a Jewish-majority state. But the second approach may be the only acceptable solution left unless the settlements in the West Bank are dismantled. Any acceptable solution is impossible so long as the Nazi-wannabees of the Likud Party are in power; but Labor has its own share of the blame. Still, should the U.S. ever have an even-handed policy, one recognizing the rights of Palestinians as well as Israelis, there might be a chance for a peaceful settlement.

As you pointed out IF the 'questioning' people of Germany HAD been able to actually DO something about their government, perhaps it may never had happened.

on an American message board of the Democratic Party of America. Israel is a foriegn nation just like any other. It will be criticized just like any other. Nothing "special" or "chosen" about it, sorry. That hypersensitive fragile delicate treatment of Israel has led us right into the mess in Iraq and many, many dead people. The elephant is not only in the living room, it is stepping on our faces and leaving a mess on the floor. Pretending it's not there is getting too dangerous for us all. Get over it.

An important part of that would be to stop financing the racist government of Israel and to join the civilized world in deploring Israel's genocidal policies. It may be too late for a two-state solution, because settlers and the IDF have pushed too far; but it might not be: a removal of the IDF and of ALL settlements beyond the 1967 lines might still make for a solution. If not, then Palestinians will soon outnumber Israelis, assuming Israel doesn't try for a 'final solution,' and that will ultimately destroy Israel as a Jewish state, because the majority of Palestinians will ultimately gain political representation.

As for Hamas, they are no better than the IDF and the Likud. Their best ally has been Sharon, just as they have been his -- together, they have established a cycle of violence that has done exactly what both intended: undermined chances for democracy, reform, and an acceptable settlement.

As for claims that wishes for an equitable peace in Israel/Palestine constitutes anti-Semitism, that is political spin that is beneath contempt and does not merit a response.
