Israel's bloody assault on Gaza continues
Israel's bloody assault on Gaza continues
Tuesday 18 May 2004

Israeli ocupation forces have killed at least 19 Palestinians in a prolonged military assault in the southern Gaza Strip.

An 11-year-old boy and his 15-year- old sister were among the latest victims to be shot dead on Tuesday.

Ahmad Muhammad al-Mughayyir and his sister Asma were hit in the head as they played in their family's home in Tul al-Sultan area of Rafah refugee camp, medical sources and witnesses said.

Another Palestinian who had been seriously wounded after being shot by Israeli troops in the early morning also died of his injuries.

The latest deaths raised to at least 19 the number of Palestinians killed since the start of the Israeli operation in the flashpoint area early on Tuesday.

21. Can you do math?
The Israeli occupation is brutal, tragic, and self-defeating. But to compare it to the Nazi campaign of genocide is obscene.

It is also just a little bit icky to refer to Jews as Nazis.

That's why they're building a wall.

He's a racist old bastard, but he has killed a lot fewer Arabs/Palestinians than King Hussein of Jordan, Assad of Syria, or Saddam ever did.

But one never heard Assad being called a Nazi.

29. Well...
the same could be said of the other side's leadership as well. That said, I don't agree with either side's leadership, I'm tired of that mess, and I can only imagine what the normal, average, everyday citizen in both groups over there feel each and every single day of their lives.

I don't know how you stop it, and I doubt it can be stopped. Short of everybody killing everybody else, it's just not going to end.

But I can't see it ending well. Not just this problem, but everything. Those nukes are just sitting there around the world. One will be used again. If there's one thing we humans are not good at, it's not using things. When that day comes, and the next nuclear weapon is used, anywhere, by anyone, game's over.

Like George Carlin says, we have a front row seat to the freak show. All you can do is basically wait until we go extinct.

A mass murdere who kills 20 people (including your family) or a mass murderer who kills 30 people?

Genocide is genocide....it matters not whether it is perpetrated by German nationals or Israeli nationals or the Pope.

36. Nonesense, Mr. Creek
Genocide is indeed genocide, and genocide is not being practiced in the Levant today by anyone. Genocide refers, Sir, to the killing of a great proportion of a people, either as a whole, or within a discrete geographic unit. It does not refer to the sort of minor casualties involved in the current operations in Gaza, or for that matter, in the current on-going hostilities. Roughly three thousand Arab Palestinians have been killed in three years of hostilities, about half of them being undeniably combatants. The population of Arab Palestinians west of the Jordan amounts to about four and one half millions, and thus in three years approximately two thirds of one tenth of one percent of that population has been killed, including armed combatant casualties. If that, Sir, constitutes genocide, then a paper cut constitutes a mortal wound requiring emergency hospitalization....

43. "Big Gaza Raid"?
Israel Kills 19 Palestinians in Big Gaza Raid

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (Reuters) - Israel's army killed 19 Palestinians on Tuesday in the heaviest raid in the Gaza Strip for years as tanks and infantry thrust into Rafah refugee camp, a militant hotbed, despite an international outcry.

The assault drew U.N. and European Union condemnation given Israeli threats to destroy hundreds of Palestinian homes there. Thousands of Palestinian houses have been razed since they began a revolt in occupied territory in 2000, U.N. figures show.

But the army said there were no plans for any systematic demolition during what it called an open-ended operation to stop the smuggling of arms through tunnels from nearby Egypt.

An army spokesman said troops flattened five buildings from which militants had fired on soldiers and a sixth was blown up when a bomb being prepared by a militant detonated prematurely.

2. AP - Amnesty International Criticizes Israel
JERUSALEM - Israel is guilty of war crimes in its destruction of thousands of Palestinian homes in the West Bank and Gaza Strip (news - web sites), the human rights group Amnesty International charged in a report Tuesday.

Release of the report coincided with an Israeli operation in the Rafah refugee camp on the Israel-Egypt border, where Israel has said it might knock down more homes to widen a buffer zone in its battle against weapons-smuggling tunnels.

However, army officials said Tuesday no systematic demolition of homes was planned.

The report said the demolition and destruction are "grave breaches of the Fourth Geneva Convention and are war crimes," calling on Israel to halt the practices immediately. Amnesty also said the house demolitions are linked to Israeli intentions to take over West Bank and Gaza land.

According to the report, Israel has destroyed more than 3,000 Palestinian homes, most of them in the impoverished and densely populated Gaza Strip, since Israeli-Palestinian fighting broke out more than three years ago.

14. And they wonder where all these terrorists come from?
With approximately 11,000 Palestinians made homeless,I'll give you 11,000 guesses. What if your local government came and knocked down your home with a bulldozer. Watch out, cause somebody is going to pay.

And when Israel gets a suicide bonbing as a response,it's all over the papers. "These A-Rabs are Barbarians".I suppose what's happening here is not. Putting Palestinian kids and moms on the street is what the Administration calls "Israel's right to defend itself". I notice this ethnic cleansing gets about 1 minute of air tme and a small admonishment from the Bush Administration. Israel knows they don't really mean it or they would withold some of the Billions they give them.As long as that ain't happening, the admonishment is a joke. They just don't want to further inflame Iraqi insurgents by saying nothing.

13. EU's Solana blasts Gaza clampdown, eyes US support
EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana reiterated Tuesday Europe's condemnation of Israel's demolitions of homes in the Gaza Strip, and said the United States broadly shares the EU's views.

Speaking after talks with Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Mubarak al-Khalifa, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Arab League, he stressed that the Israeli action breaches the terms of the so-called road map for Middle East peace.

"I would like to join him in saying that what is taking place now in Gaza is something that we have to condemn and to condemn very strongly," he said, standing next to the Bahraini minister.

The clampdown is "something that goes very much against the letter and the spirit of the roadmap.. we would like to condemn it and condemn it in the most firm manner," he added.

Asked if he would like the United States to put more pressure on the Israelis, he said: "We would like to have a united line," adding that the EU and the US line "is not very different ... on this particular issue.

18. Israel ignores international outcry, continues sweep through Rafah
The operation along the Gaza-Egypt border has sparked a growing international outcry. The United Nations and the European Union have demanded an end to the incursion and Amnesty International has accused Israel of war crimes.

Israeli military vehicles in Rafah (AP photo)

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat described the attack as a "big massacre." He's calling for international intervention.

Before the ground assault Israeli helicopter gunships launched strikes. Israel says the sweeps by soldiers and destruction of houses are necessary to round up terrorists and stop weapons smuggling.

The Israeli military calls what it's doing in Rafah "Operation Rainbow."
