Initial report: Hamas leader Rantisi killed in IAF strike
According to initial reports, Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantisi was killed in an Israeli helicopter missile strike on his car Saturday evening.

Two other people were killed in the strike, witnesses said.

A burned, destroyed car was left on the road near Rantisi's house and one badly burned body was removed from the car by paramedics. Witnesses said there were three people in the car at the time.

Palestinians ran into the street following the strike and called for revenge.

There was no immediate response from the IDF.

Rantisi was the newly-appointed head of the militant group in Gaza, following the assassination of Hamas founder and spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in a similar Israeli strike last month.

12. Next?
Who wants to be the next leader of Hamas? Perhaps the only worse career move is the insurance agent who sells Hamas leaders their life insurance policies.

15. Why?
Sharon never sent a teenage Jewish girl to kill Rantisi. He never sent kids into a disco to blow up other kids dancing. He never sent kids to kill Rantisis aunt and her son buying pizza...and he never outlawed homosexuality.

Granted Israel would be better off with Shimon Peres or Ehud Barak or Mitznah..

But comparing him to this murderer is dishonest.

16. Apologism for Sharon
Is just as disingenuous ....

Sharon is without a doubt complicit in the destruction of approximately 1800 live human beings in Sabra/Chatilla ...

This is no far fetched assertion; it is accepted public record ...

Accepted, that is, by those who do not the revel in death of their opponents children ....

22. What about the bombardment of Beirut?
Random slaughter of innocent civilians is terrorism, in my mind, as well as illegal.

So Sharon is a war criminal and a terrorist. Would you cheer his assasination?

25. That is outrageous

The LEBANESE murdered the men, women, and children of Sabra and Shatila. They did it out of well-deserved.

The men, women and children of Sabra and Shatila deserved to be hated? Wow, that's hatred, alright.

And you're right, Sharon didn't lift a finger. He had the authority to lift a finger and prohibit Major Haddid and his thugs from entering the camp. He didn't lift a finger.

And because he didn't lift a finger, he is complicit in the murder that ensued.

Sharon has since claimed that he had no idea what Haddid's men were going to do. The Kahane Commission stated flatly Sharon's defense was hard to believe.

26. That is all true....
And disgusting.....
Sharon should not be in public office....

but it was NOT the Jews who did the massacaring and it is not the Israelis or Sharon who should be labelled as war criminals....

It is the people (Lebanese/phalanges) who commited these atrocities that should be held responsible....

28. It's a bit more complicated than that
Following the evacuation of the armed members of the PLO per the peace plan, the Israeli Army cordoned off the camps so that they completely controlled access, prohibiting people from entering and leaving the camps. The only way the Lebanese Forces (Phalangists) could have entered the camp would have been with the permission of Sharon who was the General in charge of the operation.

And if that were not enough, the massacre occured over a 48 hour period of time. During this time, Sharon was made VERY aware of the situation, yet chose to do nothing. The news even reached the US envoy who had brokered the cease-fire agreement, Morris Draper, whose direct pleas to Sharon to act to stop the bloodshed were ignored.

It is obvious Sharon was fully aware of what was going on and deliberately allowed the Phalangists full access to the camps. It was also Sharon who deliberately allowed it to continue when he was the only one who could have stopped it.

Any attempt to claim innocence through ignorance is obscene given the extreme culpability of Sharon's actions. He knew about it, he allowed it, he could have stopped it at any time.

29. Sharon is a war criminal for other reasons, too...
Sabra and Shatila weren't the only war crimes during the invasion of Lebanon.

32. True
There were such things as the targeted demolition of homes (civilian) occupied by Palestinians during the initial advance. They only stopped when the Maronites thought such destruction wasteful (they wanted the homes).

It was one of Sharon's and Begin's goals to push the Palestinians out of Lebanon, or if failing that, at least from Southern Lebanon. In so doing, what was initially billed as an incursion to disrupt the Fatah irregulars from attacks on Northern Israel into an ever increasing sweep of Southern and Central Lebanon to push all Palestinians northward.

This was one of the reasons why Palestinian resistance was so stiff and why Lebanon turned into Israel's Vietnam. It was also the reason why Begin limited Kahane's charter to only Sabra and Shatila to avoid exposing the bigger picture of which Sabra and Shatila were just a climax.
