Israeli Army Blocks Entrance to Arafat HQ

- Israeli army jeeps blocked entry to Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Thursday for the first time in a year, witnesses said.
Israeli security sources said the soldiers were on a routine arrest mission that had not been directed at the "Muqata," which was badly damaged in an Israeli assault near the start of more than three years of Israeli-Palestinian violence.

Palestinian witnesses said the Israeli troops checked the identity of people entering and leaving the compound. They left after about eight hours. Israel Radio said one Palestinian had been arrested.

It was the first time in a year that the army had taken such measures near the complex where Arafat has been confined by Israel. It came ahead of a meeting of the Palestinian leader's Fatah movement.

5. What is the point of this?

Arafat and the PA are becoming more powerless by the day. The Palestinians continue suffering and see that no improvement is in sight; due to this the popular support for the PA is crumbling. Its infrastructure has been shattered by Israel, and the various guerilla forces are gaining strength. Even among his own Fatah party, Arafat is having problems. Nothing constructive will be accomplished by this, and much harm in the form of increased resentment will likely result (like them or not, most people don't like their leaders being surrounded by foreign forces).

If Israel is going to try to solve this militarily, the very least they can do is go after real threats.
