Israel prevents suicide bombing planned for Tel Aviv
Israel's security establishment last week prevented a suicide bombing planned for central Tel Aviv, according to details released Monday, Army Radio said.

The blast was to have been caused by an explosive device hidden in a computer monitor, the radio said. The bomb was uncovered Monday.

Following his arrest in the Askar refugee camp in the West Bank on Sunday, the would-be bomber, 18-year-old Tanzim member Ahmed Ashkar, admitted that he intended to carry out the attack.

Ashkar said he intended to lure Israel Defense Forces soldiers to the monitor, and then detonate the explosives.

Another one that didn't happen. Lives are saved because of IDF actions. It's not the graciousness of the terrorists that more Israeli civilians haven't been murdered, it's the IDF actions against terrorist infiltrations.

1. Too bad they won't deal with this guy the way they should
They should place him out in the Negev someplace with his bomb and let the two of them live a short life together.

But thank God for the skill of the IDF.

9. So not true
The IDF is massively restrained. How long do you think OTHER nations would tolerate the terror that comes across the border from the Palestinian areas?

Not long. And their responses would be far, far worse.

2. Why not take comprehensive steps to stop the violence?
While Ariel Sharon tries to make himself look macho, and while half a hundred Israel-hating sociopaths wrap young fools in explosives and send them into checkpoints, cafes and weddings, nobody has been trying to establish peace in the Middle East.

It seems that it's to nobody's interest to do so.

Oh, yes, they all say they're trying, but when you look at the list of stipulations, qualifications and justifications, you realize that peace is the last thing on the leaderships' minds.

The Clinton approach was to actively "meddle" in the process with the intent of making Israelis and Palestinians partners in cultural and economic activity -- thereby choking off support for both the bombers and the bulldozers, and providing a pro-American bulwark against the militant fundamentalist radicalism that is eating away the guts of the Islamic world like battery acid -- and killing as many Israelis/Jews as it can in the process.

The Clinton approach would also send people like Sharon into retirement to watch their investment portfolios grow as peace turned Israel/Palestine into a rich oasis in the region.

Neither of the knuckleheaded Middle Eastern power blocs realize that a unified I/P political movement would quickly and easily dominate area politics, completely turning the situation around. Israel would have peace, and the Palestinians would no longer be the football of the Arab world. This is even aside from the consideration of returning land to the Palestinians.

It seems to me that someone is making a lot of hay out of this ongoing catastrophe. Someone with a lot of financial interest in the Middle East. Especially regarding the oil under it.

Hmm, I wonder who that could be?

I + P = peace, prosperity and justice for the Middle East.

3. Great in theory
That was the attitude when I was in Israel. Everyone looked to a future of economic and social cooperation.

Then came the rejected peace offer and Intifada I and II.

Now there is too much water under that bridge. The best we can hope for is constructive DIS-engagement at this point.
