Five killed in Gaza camp raid
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3309085.stm

Five Palestinians have been killed and 17 wounded following an Israeli incursion into a Gaza refugee camp, hospital sources say.

In Thursday's dawn operation in the refugee camp, attack helicopters provided back-up to Israeli troops after they were fired on and had hand grenades thrown at them.

Officials at Rafah hospital said two of the wounded - including a boy aged 12 - were in a critical condition.

Witnesses said about 20 Israeli armoured vehicles, including tanks, took part in the operation.

4. News.com.au reporting 6 dead
(the story itself has been almost entirely ignored by the American media)

One of them was a Palestinian medic, who was shot as he was helping a wounded Palestinian reach an ambulance and died shortly after being transferred to Gaza City's Shifa hospital, medical sources said.

9. PCHR reporting 9 homes demolished too
The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights

On Thursday morning, 11 December2003 , Israeli occupying forces killed 5 Palestinians, injured13 , and destroyed 9 houses during a military incursion into the al-Salam neighborhood in Rafah. Israeli occupying forces stated that the aim of the operation was to arrest a Palestinian wanted for involvement in attacks against Israeli targets.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately: 04:00 Thursday, Israeli soldiers, reinforced by a number of heavy military vehicles and a military helicopter, moved approximately600 m into the al-Salam neighborhood in the south of Rafah, adjacent to the Egyptian border. Under cover of Israeli gunfire, Israeli troops surrounded houses in the neighbourhood belonging to the families of al-Qadhi and al-Waqili. Israeli soldiers used megaphones to call on residents to exit their homes. Soldiers also called on Khaled al-Qadhi to surrender to them. Israeli forces stated that they believed him to be a member of the Islamic Jihad. Residents exited their homes and Israeli soldiers detained them for about an hour; the male residents, over the age of 18 , were handcuffed and blindfolded. Khaled al-Qadhi refused to leave his house and a gunfight ensued between him and Israeli soldiers. Israeli soldiers ordered residents to evacuate the area. Shortly after, Israeli occupying forces demolished 9 houses belonging to the families of al-Qadhi and al-Waqili, rendering 65 people ( 11families) homeless.

13 Palestinian civilians, including 6 children and 2 women, were wounded. Four of the injured remain in a critical condition.

2. From the posted article
In Thursday's dawn operation in the refugee camp, attack helicopters provided back-up to Israeli troops after they were fired on and had hand grenades thrown at them.

<snip>

An Israeli army spokesman said that Mr al-Qadi had been behind a number of attacks against Israeli troops along the border with Israel.

Rafah camp is the frequent scene of battles between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers.

Israeli forces often carry out searches for tunnels used to smuggle weapons from Egypt.

According to the Israeli army, Mr al-Qadi was one of the main operators of the arms-smuggling operation.

Firing from ciilian areas and hiding among civilians is prohibited. Mr al-Qadi was arrested. Much better if he had surrendered without a fight. The civilian deaths could have been avoided. Such actions (such as hiding among civilians; firing from civilian areas) are against the Genevea Conventions.
