Berlin refuses to recognize unilateral Palestinian statehood
Berlin - Germany will not recognize a Palestinian nation if if it unilaterally declares itself a state, Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

She said Germany supported a two-state solution, with a Palestinian and an Israeli state side by side, but added, 'Unilateral recognitions are in no way whatever a help to move towards this objective.'

She was referring to Palestinian plans, which have alarmed the Netanyahu government, to declare a state this September without waiting for a negotiated solution.
