Israeli actor slain in Jenin refugee camp
Source: Washington Post

JERUSALEM — A prominent Israeli actor and director who mentored young Palestinians at a youth theater that he founded in the West Bank town of Jenin was fatally shot Monday in the community’s refugee camp.

Juliano Mer Khamis, 52, born to a Jewish mother and a Christian Arab father, personified the complexities of the conflict dividing his country.

He served in the Israeli army as a paratrooper and portrayed Israeli Jews in film and stage roles, but he cast his lot with the Palestinians.

Mer Khamis was walking to his car near the theater on Monday when a masked man approached him and fired five times, a witness and the local police chief said.

4. Will this person be as well known in death as Rachel Corrie?
Or will this hero be sadly forgotten?

5. How would the left have reacted had Juliano Mer-Khamis been murdered by Jews?
It is not hard to imagine what would have happened had Juliano Mer-Khamis been murdered by Jews. The murder would receive a huge headline in Haaretz. Under the headline, five furious analyses would appear - one of them mine.

The writers would harshly denounce the Jewish murderousness and urge a culture war against Jewish fanaticism. Others would demand not to repeat the mistake made after Baruch Goldstein's murderous rampage and to evacuate the settlements immediately. Others would demand to look into the goings on in the Hesder yeshivas, which offer Torah studies alongside military service, and the state-run religious education system.

Selected racist quotes would be pulled out of primitive rabbis' writings, historic comparisons would be made to Emil Gruenzweig's murder and Yitzhak Rabin's murder and Martin Luther King's murder.

Within a day Mer-Khamis would become an icon. On Saturday night thousands would gather holding torches to mourn the peace hero and rise up against the powers of darkness. Mer-Khamis' murder at the hands of Jews would rebuild the left, reunite it and send it to a new battle against murderous Jewish fascism.

6. How would the 'right' have reacted?
would the 'right' be eulogizing Mer-Khamis as floridly as they are now?

13. The left is good at self-examination
The article from Ha'aretz that I posted is a nice example of that.

The right, not so much.

11. Mer-Khamis was left-wing - in a far more practical sense than most
and was both a Jew and an Arab.

I don't think that he would have wished his death to be used to score points against the 'left' as this author seems to be doing.

What the left, and all who seek peace, need to do is to honour Mer-Khamis' memory by supporting more peace and coexistence projects, and to defy the right-wing extremists on both sides who will do everything in their power to prevent this.

And the crime was committed by the particular individual who did it - not by all Arabs, and not by the Israel left. Put him in prison, and throw away the key - but it's *his* crime; not the 'left's or the 'Arabs'.

10. This is awful. RIP.
Sadly, there are some people who will do anything to prevent peace.

Let us hope that it is the legacy of this good man that triumphs, not the hatefulness of the enemies of peace on both sides.

Best thoughts to his family.
