Poll: 46% in favor of 'price tag'
Ynet-Gesher survey conducted after Itamar massacre shows nearly half of Jewish public believes extreme rightists' actions against Palestinians are justified

<snip>

"Nearly half of Israel's Jewish population believes the "price tag" activities executed by extreme rightists against Palestinians are justified to a certain extent, according to a survey conducted for Ynet and the Gesher educational organization.

The poll was carried out by the Panels research institute following the massacre of five family members in the settlement of Itamar, among 504 respondents who constitute a national representative sample of the adult Jewish population in Israel. The sampling error stands at 4.4%.

Respondents were asked to refer to the "price tag" activities executed by extreme right-wing elements. Forty-eight percent said there was no room for such actions (33% - "totally unjustified", 15% - "somewhat unjustified"). On the other hand, some 22% said the actions were "perfectly justified", and 23% defined them as "quite justified".

While most seculars oppose "price tag" activities (36% in favor, 57% against), most traditional, national-religious and ultra-Orthodox Jews believe these actions are justified (55%, 70% and 71%, respectively)."

2. Depressing.

But this goes along with a general characteristic of many countries and groups: they are neither universally peace-loving nor univerally violent and revengeful, but tend to be approximately evenly split between those who are generally dovish and those who are generally hawkish. This makes it both possible and vitally important to make efforts to tilt a population more to the dovish side; unfortunately, hawkishness on either side increases it on the other.

As is many countries, there seems to be an increasing association between the secular/religious divide and the dovish/hawkish divide.

While the government worries about the left 'delegitimizing' and 'undermining' Israel, the extreme right may end up 'delegitimizing' and 'undermining' Israel far more effectively. I hope it doesn't take a serious act of domestic terrorism for people to see that far-rightists who support extralegal violence are anti-democracy and thus anti-Israel

4. This goes a bit beyond 'generally hawkish'.
'Price-tag' attacks by extremist settlers on Palestinian civilians should be called what they are - terrorism. There'd be no hesitancy at all in calling it terrorism if it were Palestinians attacking Israelis like that.

3. But that 48% oppose is meaningless because the rightists still carry out the "activities."
And the government still participates in illegal settlement activity.
