Israeli army crosses into Lebanon: state media
Source: Xinhua News Agency

BEIRUT, Jan. 17 -- An Israeli army unit on Sunday crossed the borders with Lebanon in the direction of the occupied part of al-Ghajar village, Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.

"An intense Israeli build-up of forces during the past 24 hours has been observed along the eastern sector of the Blue Line, with mobile and fixed patrols," said NNA.

It added that "Israeli tank emplacements were spotted amid intense overflights by helicopter gunships and warplanes."

"Earlier, an Israeli mechanized infantry unit comprised of two Hummers crossed the UN-designated Blue Line for 300 meters in the direction of the occupied part of al-Ghajar village," said NNA.

17. Haiti is a distraction to them
World focus on Haiti gives Israel more room to move as they will

Quite well, too.

The new Israeli field hospital here reflects the streets of the capital, fluctuating between despair and hope amid the looting, violence and stories of miracles. Each account takes on great importance against the background of the earthquake that devastated the Western hemisphere's poorest country.

A baby around 18 months old lies on a bed in intensive care. She was admitted with an open sore and a massive infection throughout her body. The respirator shakes her every time it forces air into her. She has already been resuscitated a few times, and the team is not optimistic.

In the children's ward, located in a tent, is a baby under a year old; someone left him here after he was pulled out of the rubble Sunday morning. He has open sores on his leg and does not make a sound except for a slight chirping when the doctor checks his leg. The doctors say he is in shock.

--snip--

"We're all thinking about the fact that we discharge them into the street, in effect, because they have no home," says Dr. Avi Yitzhak. "But you have to make the right decision: Either you take in 40 people and treat them for two weeks or you try to save as many as possible to at least stop the primary injury."

Yitzhak immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia in 1991 and says he feels a special connection to the patients here. He says he knows the problems of practicing medicine in the developing world.

"There's no organized network of clinics here, there's nowhere to discharge them to and we have to treat as many people as possible, as long as it's still possible to save them," Yitzhak says.

Israeli field hospital reflects Haiti's despair

Perhaps you and the other posters in your reflexively ignorant posts are unaware of this information. Perhaps you are unaware of the situation in that area (in the article)? Perhaps it is as it always is here...Israel = bad.

ETA: What does your post even mean? I misread it as if the Israelis were doing nothing, but now I read it and don't understand a damn thing your implying.

3. Israel has been overstepping its boundaries--horribly.
I really think that the time for a credible peace process in the Middle East in the form of the two-state solution for the Israeli Jews and the Palestinians is long, long overdue. The United States should stay Israel's hand and restrain them more. We shouldn't invade other countries, and neither should Israel, imho.

6. I fully support that
As soon as the rocket attacks and bombings stop.

Until then I tend to believe Israel is defending itself.

Right. They need that area for buffer zones. They'll give it back later. Right. ;-)

Two trucks go joyriding approximately 800ft or so into Lebanese territory!

OMFG!!!11!

By the way, since the article is a POS disguised as journalism, are the two trucks still on Lebanese soil?

10. Less than it seems.
"Al-Ghajar" rang some bells. It's a village that used to be entirely in Syria/Israel (part of Syria occupied by Israel; Israeli citizens). During the occupation of Lebanon it grew over the border.

So now it's one of the few parts of Lebanon that is officially considered Lebanon--as opposed to the "Is it Syrian or is it Lebanese?" Shebaa Farms--that is still occupied.

It's been occupied straight along. Israel's not pulled out. This is status quo, not some huge invasion. However the Lebanese state-run media may be reporting it.

Apparently the Fall '09 plan hasn't quite worked out. There are also reports that Lebanon gave Hezbollah the green light for attacking it, but it's not clear that those are anything more than rumors.

Two Hummers. Mechanized infantry unit. Hell, that means the little area I live in is occupied by a mechanized infanty unit. And you can see dozens of such units on the toll way most mornings.

Tank emplacements. Were there tanks in them?

15. The Israelis are at it AGAIN???
Why can't they just stay inside their own effin' borders?

Perhaps if the USA didn't give them $3 Billion of war toys every year, they wouldn't be so inclined to play with them every 6 damn months.

16. Eve of Destruction? Barry McGuire, I'm becoming a believer.
:(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONQ0ZHQNQ9M

The eastern world, it is exploding
Violence flarin, bullets loadin
Youre old enough to kill, but not for votin
You dont believe in war, but whats that gun youre totin
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin

But you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you dont believe
Were on the eve
of destruction.

Dont you understand what Im tryin to say
Cant you feel the fears Im feelin today?
If the button is pushed, theres no runnin away
Therell be no one to save, with the world in a grave

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you dont believe
Were on the eve
of destruction.

Yeah, my bloods so mad feels like coagulatin
Im sitting here just contemplatin
I cant twist the truth, it knows no regulation.
Handful of senators dont pass legislation
And marches alone cant bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you dont believe
Were on the eve
of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
You may leave here for 4 days in space
But when you return, its the same old place
The poundin of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but dont leave a trace
Hate your next-door neighbor, but dont forget to say grace
And tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend
You dont believe
Were on the eve
Of destruction
Mm, no no, you dont believe
Were on the eve
of destruction.

25. Perhaps, however
if the story is true, it describes an armed incursion for no apparent reason. Why start something with Hezbollah? Could it be a mistake?

26. Probably not a mistake.
However, they're not freshly occupying territory. It's territory they've never yielded, although they should have. They seem to be trying to work out some agreement so that Israeli citizens can stay there, unmolested, under Israeli law but under Lebanese sovereignty. That should be interesting.

Still, not a trivial point when using the word "incursion".
