"The United Nations joined a chorus of international voices Wednesday urging Israel to freeze all settlement activities and natural growth in the occupied West Bank, reports say.
In his message to a United Nations meeting in Geneva under the auspices of the 'Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People', Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said if Israel continues settlement activity, it will not only be acting contrary to international laws but also to a strong international consensus.
But if Israel freezes settlement activity, it would facilitate a new environment of cooperation and common purpose from the countries in the region, building on the framework for the Arab Peace Initiative, he added.
The U.N. call came a week after the United States told Israel that it must halt an East Jerusalem construction project in accordance with the Obama administration's demands for a complete freeze on settlement building. The European Union and Russia has also warned the Jewish nation this week not to derail a Middle East peace plan."
