PCHR: 894 of the 1,284 Palestinians killed in Gaza op were civilians
A Palestinian human rights group said a total of 1,284 Palestinians were killed and 4,336 wounded in Israel's 23-day war on Gaza's Hamas rulers.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) said the data was collected by its field researchers and checked against information from hospitals and clinics.

The center says 894 of the dead were civilians, including 280 children and minors, ages 17 and under. In addition to the civilians, 167 members of the civil police were also killed.

The PCHR was a main source of information about dead and wounded during the war.

1. This should put the final nail in the coffin of "surgical strike" nonsense, as well as the
tired old slogan about the IDF being a moral fighting force.

3. Seems to be about 70% civilian.

Indicates about 400 "non-civilian", one presumes those were actually trying to fight back in some form.

6. All the evidence clearly suggests that civilians casualties were part of the plan.
This is typical Israel-speak.

Say one thing that sounds good (or as good as can be).
Do something completely different.
By the time the truth catches up to the spin, everyone has moved on.

This time though, the reality was so horrendous, they might not be able to escape from the consequences.

Massive civilain casualties
White Phosphorus
DIME
bullets lodged in kids' heads...
civilian homes bulldozed...
UN buildings targetted

Here's to the investigation and prosecution of every single war crime.

7. I don't think PCHR is an Israeli source.
I commented on the issue of intentions here:

8. It's not Isareli, but I would guess that there will be a number of investigations which all point to
the same conclusions.

In any case, those of us who state the obvious can't be accused of being tin-foil hat wearers, or anti-semites.

and most likely they will.

I expect endless haggling over the actual numbers, fruitless endless haggling, but I think these from PCHR will do well enough.

2. Who knows, since the Hamas huge 20,000 "fighting force"
hid in civilians' clothing, in civilian homes?

Where were those big ballsy bravado fighters?

Hiding like cowards, dressed like civilians.

Loss of innocent life is regretable, but the more Hamas thugs killed, the better.

4. And if you were fighting as part of an armed resistance...
...penned in in an urban area, what clothes would YOU wear? Y'know, if it was YOUR neighbourhood?

Thats right Vegasaurus, these davids fighting the IDF goliath with relatively puny weapons are all cowards :eyes:

"Loss of innocent life is regretable, but the more Hamas thugs killed, the better."

Easy thing to say when the innocents are not related to you.

10. holy mother of God, 70%
that just seems absolutely massive. If that's true then it really does put a period to the discussion re IDF targeting civilians

13. This is the inverse of the ratio that was being claimed
when it looked like all adult males were counted as fighters.

16. They were claiming only 20% civilian casualties and they gave out numbers
for dead women and children, iirc. But, they never did say what constituted a male "child", did they?

17. Who are the 500 adult males that PCHR is counting among civilians?
Edited on Wed Jan-21-09 11:11 AM by oberliner
That seems to be where the discrepancy lies between the IDF's numbers and these.

The PCHR identifies approximately 900 of those killed as civilians.

Of that number, the group says that approximately 300 are children and 100 are women.

That leaves about 500 adult males among those they are identifying as civilians.

I believe that the IDF identifies about the same number of women and children casualties, but only includes a very small fraction of those 500 adult males in their civilian casualty count.
