70,000 Iranian students 'volunteer to carry out suicide bombings in Israel'
Source: telegraph.co.uk

Volunteer suicide groups have made similar requests in the past and the government has never responded, which suggests that the campaigns are mostly propaganda.

According to the official IRNA news agency, hardline student leader Esmaeil Ahmadi said the students want to fight Israel in support of Hamas, Gaza's Islamic militant rulers.

Iran is Hamas' main backer, though the country denies sending weapons to the Islamic militant movement that took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007. Iran considers Israel its sworn enemy, and Mr Ahmadinejad has called for the destruction of the Jewish state.

Five hard-line student groups and a conservative clerical group launched the registration drive for suicide bombers last week and asked the government to allow them to stage the attacks.

7. Sad to think that supposed "liberals" would believe anything that the Telegraph publishes.
This is the same paper that touted the "big find" of documents in Iraq that "proved" that George Galloway was on Saddam's payroll.

Except it was all bullshit, and Galloway won a big fat libel suit against them for publishing such crap.

Consider the source before you start shaking your pom-poms.

13. I don't see anything about "suicide bombers". They obviously want to go fight on behalf of the
Palestinians, which means there's a chance they might die ("martyrdom seeking"), but there's nothing at the irna link about "suicide bombers".

This is what happens in war. People want to sign up to help the side they support and fight against the other side. Israel has the U.S. on its side, providing the most up-to-date weapon systems and total political cover.

If, as Israel likes to describe it, this is a "war", then no one should cry foul when the opposing side has allies who want to join the fight.

Plus they'd overload Israel's harassment checkpoints.

Can't be that many genuine student volunteers.

44. A martyrdom operation
is one in which the individual expects, and more importantly intends, to die during the course of its execution - a one-way mission. Often this imples 'suicide bomber', and that is the most common form of deliberate martyrdom operation at the present time on planet Earth, but it hasn't always been so. Japanese kamikazee pilots were engaged in martyrdom operations in WWII, as were Japanese officers who charged entire groups of American troops with just a sword seeking to be killed in battle rather than face the humility of capture. American servicemen throwing themselves on grenades to save comrades, or suiciding their burning aircraft into enemy ships were carrying out the same sort of self-sacrificial act, just on an ad hoc 'heat of battle' basis.

since the original Islamic Republic News Agency piece was published at the IRNA English-language website, and in English they clearly use the words 'martyrdom operations.' Sounds more like The Telegraph deciding to sex it up by using the more attention-getting term 'suicide bombers.'
