Can Israelis cook Chinese better than the Chinese?
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/200... /

"We feel an Israeli can hold a wok as well as a Thai or Chinese person," said Israel Trade Ministry lawyer Shoshana Strauss to the Associated Press. She also reportedly suggested that "everyone can make Chinese food" and that it is a skill not impossible to learn.

With over 7 million people in Israel, why can't they take in about 900 Asian chefs?

1. Considering that a lot of the line cooks in "French" restaurants in the US
are from Central America, I'd say yes, it is entirely possible to learn to cook a cuisine that isn't from one's own ethnicity and to do it superlatively.

3. Not only that, but
my hubby cooked in a Chinese restaurant for years, and was excellent. He even made the gross things westerners won't eat, and got rave reviews from Chinese diners.

4. My wife is Chinese and having had the opportunity to actually have authentic Chinese food in China,
I just want to say that authentic Chinese food is wonderful and that there is much of it that is not actually cooked in a wok. Chinese food consists of so many styles, regional tastes, and ingredients. Much authentic Chinese food is quite healthy unlike the "fast food variety" widely available here in the United States. Many people in the U.S. think of Chinese food simply as the stuff that one can find in the mall or at various Chinese take out restaurants. This is like saying that McDonalds and KFC are representative of authentic American food. By the way, both KFC and McDonalds are quite popular in the large Chinese cities.

5. uh, yeah, right. Maybe they need to import Chinese to do their laundry, too?
This idea that only Chinese people can make Chinese food is ridiculous. End of discussion.

6. Wow, ANY excuse to hate on the Jews.

I cannot believe you are making a fuss over this.

You might want to pay a tiny bit more attention to the growing Chinese presence in Egypt and Africa. Because the Chinese are untainted by the Crusades as the western nations are. When we are broken and exhausted and finally completely destroyed by this insane war, guess who is being carefully positioned to become the beloved honest broker and walk away with all that oil without firing a shot?

But you spend your time worrying about the Chinese cooks. That's a BIG issue.

PS: Ever ordered Chinese food in Ireland? Ever got all huffy because the waiters ain't Chinese? Didn't think so.

8. I have eaten some very lousy Chinese food by non-Chinese. Of course it's true that anyone
can make any type of cuisine. But often what happens is that the food becomes westernized, or adjusted to the point where it's unrecognizable.

12. So you're objecting to bad Chinese food in Israel?
Are you the cuisine police?

10. No, dear. It's a rival super power issue.
But, by all means, deal with it as a racist. Would you be more comfortable if we were being set up by the French? Are they white enough to be clever enough to make chumps of us? How about the Russians? Would you feel better if the people making best buds all over Egypt and Africa were Russians? Lotta blue eyes and blond hair in the Russians.

If you can only deal with life in terms of race, by all means, feel free to do so.

13. Yr the only person who's mentioned Jews...
It's about Israel and foreign workers, and if you think anyone is antisemitic for daring to post the article, then I guess you also think the Israeli restaraunteurs opposed to the foreign workers being sent home are also a bunch of Jew haters, right?

15. I doubt they can cook as well as the Chinese unless they've been taught in China...
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 06:30 PM by Violet_Crumble
When I was in Italy the difference between the food there and what we get dished up as Italian food here is markedly different. Italians tend to cook their food in a much more understated way when it comes to flavour than what's done here.

btw, what was with the bizarre cannibals comment?

19. You didn't read the thread title? Israelis cook Chinese better than the Chinese
you still missed it "Israelis cook Chinese better than the Chinese can cook (their own)"..... never mind

anyway,
I had pizza in Italy. Not at all the same thing thats served up by any US pizza franchise. Other dishes, such as chicken salad, you would not even recognize since you would expect to see a ton of mayonaise to be mixed in with it on the plate.
