3 IDF troops wounded by 64-yr-old female suicide bomber
Three IDF soldiers were lightly wounded on Thursday evening when a female suicide bomber detonated near troops in Gaza's Jebalya refugee camp, the IDF said.

The army reported that soldiers had received an intelligence tip that the female suicide bomber was about to strike. The IDF said that the soldiers spotted the bomber and threw a stun grenade at her, causing her to set off the explosives she was carrying.

Hamas claimed responsibility and identified the bomber as Fatma Omar An-Najar. Her relatives said she was 64 - by far the oldest of the more than 100 Palestinian suicide bombers who have attacked Israelis over the past six years.

5. Yes.
Life is cheap when you have nothing to lose. Poor people, in desperate situations, thrive on ideology.

6. I agree, they do this because they are desperate. But I in no way
support, agree with or condone their actions.

Neither do I.
But, in the comfort of my office, I can only ponder, and think... The sociologist in me looks for reasons, explanations, and conclusions.
In spanish, the phrase that appears to apply to this situation is "A barriga llena, corazon contento," which basically means a contented soul results from a lack of 'hunger.' I am sure that the powers-that-be understand this far better than I possibly could.

7. If that is the attitude...then that explains much.
Of course, we know what the "ideology" is.

indefensible?

4. 62 Year old woman blows herself up?
What is there to defend?

This is a symptom of a fundamental breakdown in Gaza.

12. What have they posted to make you think that?
They've agreed with breakaleg that such actions aren't acceptable. I can't see how anyone could read this thread in good faith and claim they're defending those actions...

13. With what's been going on here lately, it seems to be a case of people
believing what they want to, despite what is actually being said. It's turning into a large waste of time.

There's a sheer pointlesness of claiming someone supports suicide bombings when they've said nothing to indicate it and indeed clearly state a view that's the complete opposite. While inventing others POV's while ignoring what they tell others that their actual views is might be an easy way to deal with others, it's not fair nor does it do anything but destroy the chances of genuine and civil discussion...

Speaking with the experience of having a bunch of rabid zealoted weirdos sit on another board and ascribe views to me i don't hold, i don't get why some people can't show the basic courtesy of respecting that when others explain their views to you, that's their pov and not what you (rhetorical you) invent for them...

20. I've read this thread carefully...
There is nothing here by the poster in question to suggest they are defending suicide bombings...in fact they state clearly that it's not an acceptable tactic. If I've missed reading something in this thread, please point it out. Otherwise all it appears to be is yet another case of trying to slap others with pov's that they don't hold, in this case a pov that leads to those holding it being banned...

So where are links to comments from the poster that lead you to believe they defend suicide bombings despite the fact they've stated clearly that they don't?

33. Well, the victimology you espouse appears to suggest this.
Selfishness is the hallmark of middle class thought. It centers around ethnic groups, and tends to be quite violent when directed at those outside the in-group.

30. hamas blames the palestenains.....

'Let's admit we erred'
"We didn't succeed in preserving the victory of liberating Gaza. 500 people died in the Strip since the withdrawal, as opposed to 3-4 Israelis killed by rockets. The reality in Gaza today is one of neglect, sadness, and failure. When someone errs we are scared to criticize him to avoid being accused of being against the resistance," Hamad wrote.

"When efforts are made to open the Rafah border crossing to ease the humanitarian crisis, there is always someone who fires a rocket on the crossing. When we speak about a truce, there is always someone who fires another rocket."

Hamad appeals to leaders of Palestinian factions saying that resistance against Israel is worthless when "the land is full with anarchy, corruption, thuggery, and gang killings. Isn't building the homeland part of the resistance?"

their "desperation" it seems is of their own making...or so claims the Hamas spokesman.

Hamas is NOT blaming the Palestinians - the Hamas spokesman (he's speaking for himself and not on behalf of Hamas)is saying that the palestinians are to blame for SOME of the situation, not all. He is not giving Israel a Get Out Of Jail Free Card....

32. He is speaking as the spokesman...
Edited on Fri Nov-24-06 04:27 AM by pelsar
Dr Ghazi Hamad, the spokesperson of the Palestinian government, waged scathing criticism against the Palestinian public on Sunday, blaming the Palestinians for turning the Gaza Strip into a lawless and violent place.

"Have mercy on Gaza," he wrote in an op-ed published on Sunday
_______

when the spokesperson (thats his job) writes an article.....it not a "personal opinon".....govt spokesman, especially in arab govts do not have such a thing.

nor am i saying israel is not to blame for everything, but he is very clear who is to blame for the misery of thelr lives in Gaza, themselves....read it, hes not "pulling any punches"

I would think that he would have a good idea of whats going on and where to start "fixing things'....far more than anybody here..and hes saying very clearly, its starts with the Palestenains themselves....
_________
his conclusion doesnt even mention Israel:
Let's admit to our mistakes, let's do some logical soul searching and place the interest of our people before us and say honestly We were right here and we erred there. Only then will we see that the faces of Gaza and the homeland changes," he concluded.

after their soul searching, we'll have a lot to talk about, but as he writes:

I want to stop at our mistakes, which we are accustomed to blame on others."
I would think those who are interested in peace would welcome such a step.....open self criticism would place israel and the Palestenains on the same "value" playing field, making negotiations and peace a far easier thing to accomoplish. (maybe they'll even make a newspaper parallel to Haaretz?)
