Hamas warns of referendum splits

Hamas wants to avoid a referendum on a two-state solution

The Hamas-controlled Palestinian government has warned that a planned referendum on how best to confront Israel risks splitting the community.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas wants to call a referendum on whether Palestinians back a two-state solution to the conflict with Israel.

But Prime Minister Ismail Haniya said the vote might cause a historic split in the ranks of the Palestinian people.

Hamas does not recognise Israel and officially works for its destruction.
