Play pushed underground
<snip>

"Rachel Corrie was born in Washington, killed in the Gaza Strip, praised in London and censored in Manhattan.

Now she's being forced to go underground in Toronto.

My Name Is Rachel Corrie is a play based on the life and words of the 23-year-old American activist who died in Gaza on March 16, 2003, after an incident involving an Israeli Defence Forces bulldozer.

Corrie's supporters claim she was run over deliberately during the course of a peaceful political demonstration. Those on the opposing side insist the bulldozer driver couldn't see her and it was simply an accident.

The New York production of the play was recently cancelled, because of fears that its pro-Palestinian stance would upset the Jewish community at a difficult political time.

This decision provoked a worldwide debate that has become so heated it has become necessary to keep secret the exact location of a simple reading of the script for 50 people at the University of Toronto Sunday night."

1. "Censored in Manhattan"
A new, dark chapter New York City's theatre history.

4. It's this kind

of nutty thinking that adds nothing to the debate. Your comment about believing that the Israeli lobby is controlling American thought and that the behavior of the lobby will cause an eruption of violence, is entirely over the top.

5. IMHO, it is people who live in denial, such as you appear to be doing
that will cause these hidden pustules to erupt violently.

But you know, I really don't care what you think.

I do believe that there is a powerful Israeli lobby just as there are other powerful lobbies and I think that that group does control a major part of the media and thus the information that is allowed to be passed on to the average American. But the truth always comes out eventually and it is the anger of the people who have been lied to and misled that leads to potential violence. It may not happen for decades for all I know, but I do realize that if people cannot express their doubts and questions, these thoughts reside inside and they tend to fester.

You say that I have nutty thinking. Well, maybe it seems that way to you, but IMO, your thinking is not nutty...it reflects someone who is afraid to look at both sides of a given situation.

6. ` I think that that group does control a major part of the media` mmmhhh.
There was a book about such `happenings` , written at the time of Czarist Russia.

It was subsequently found to be a forgery, but the ideas live on,and there`s been quite the resurgence of such theories in 2005/2006.

7. Have you actually bothered to
find out what my view of I/P is? Evidently not. Let me enlighten you. I believe Israel should dismantle all settlements and withdraw to within the Green Line. I do not support the wall. I am deeply concerned about the suffering of the Palestinian people, and particularly find the endless small humiliations they must endure in their daily life to be tragic. I believe that Israel has a greater burden to act justly than the Palestinians. They're the occupiers, and they're the ones with the power.

Having said that, I do understand that the Palestinians also have an obligation. Hamas has a duty toward the people of Palestine, as did Fatah before them. They need to do what serves the people best, and part of that involves stopping attacks on Israeli citizens, and certainly not condoning suicide bombings- something they did last week. I also think Hamas needs to alter its charter and it needs to recognize Israel.

I agree, from what I know, that AIPAC has far too much influence, and that it's not healthy.

Expressing doubts and anger about these things is fine, and people do it every day across this country. It's unfortunate that the press doesn't cover I/P fairly, but I don't expect it to do much right. Their coverage of I/P is just another example of how piss poor our national media is.

I've said everything I said above, many times before in this forum. Your accusation that I don't see both sides is unfounded, but heh, I've caught flak from both sides here. In fact, I've caught flak just today from both sides. Doesn't bother me too much.

I'm funny about facts, and language I consider over the top, and entrenched positions that lack any understanding of the humanity of the other side.

10. I really have to say that I respect this last post and your feelings
re: the I/P problems. Since it appears that it is I who have misread your feelings then I do owe you an apology and I am not too small to offer it.

think of my opinion is really none of my business.
