Who visits other hunting and firearm related web sites?
It seems to me that most are ran by Rightwing inbreds. Are there any that are run by sane moderate individuals?

1. I do, and I haven't seen any.
If you want a real eye-opener, go to a gun show. BTW, dont wear your Kerry gear or have bummperstickers when you go.

5. I stayed away from our local shooting range,
until the election was over. I'm sure my bumper stickers wouldn't have been well received.

31. Next gun show, I'm wearing a Bush clown-nose T-shirt.
I wonder if they'll jack up the prices on me.

2. Not that I can find, there is some discussions here on a forum.
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 10:26 AM by gordianot
You have to hold your nose when you go in. I do the same thing when I go to the shooting range, also ear plugs help.

It is not smart to dicuss politics with a gun in your hand and you are surrounded by idiots and (NRA) pukes.

There are some discussions here that are safe.

4. How do you practice good breathing control
while holding your nose? Also that means you are only controlling your weapon with one hand.

7. LOL
Good point. A lot of the people I see at rifle ranges were never taught to control breathing or even to sight in the target. They claim to know what they are doing. I had a long time shooter ask my son what he was doing adjusting his iron sights.

3. I do
I do, as I am a big supporter of the RKBA, but all the sites are run by right-wingers. Perhaps we need to start a left-leaning pro-gun site.

6. Bingo
The reason is because the righty sites don't have a faction of their own party undermining their efforts.

33. Here's a good one
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 08:06 PM by LinuxUser
http://www.glocktalk.com

The good thing about that site is that it is broken into many categories. If you want to talk about your Glock, there is a forum for that, and anyone who posts political talk in that forum will get kicked out. There's a politics forum where all the politics goes. So you can go there and have a jolly discussion of 1911 vs. Glock without having any not-quite-as-jolly discussions of the war in Iraq, the deficit, etc.

I've even made a few deals using the trading/selling section on a few.

I stay aaway form the political sections. It's a losing battle.

But plenty don't. They just talk about guns, shooting, etc. I'd never talk politics at any of those sites, it is a losing battle.

I would not bother to visit them. It would be pretty cool to have a site for liberal gun owners!

14. I don't know about ancestry, but RW/conservatives are common in all
Are there any that are run by sane moderate individuals?

The people who run serious firearm and hunting discussion groups seem sane to me, and as a whole I find that most of them tolerate opinions that differ from those of the majority.

I think it's of limited value to try to compare a gun discussion forum with DU. Political threads mostly concern alerting people to and taking action against pending restrictive gun control laws. They're focused on gun rights, whereas here on DU forums cover much broader areas of public policy.

I don't go to gun discussions to chat about politics. I'm much more interested in technical information, sources for parts, accessories, ammunition, etc.

that is really informative, a little RW, but that is to be expected. I've noticed there are more moderate people there than I ever expected though.

They have been really helpful and extremely polite. I started off over there identifying myself as a liberal, and I got some really nice and polite personal messages. I have stayed away from the political discussions, because as someone else said its a losing battle. But for shear knowledge of guns they are really good.

Check them out.

17. A few.
I usually just laugh or shake my head over some of the political discussions. The objective part of me realizes that the insanity and opinions put forth could only be expressed on the Internet.

Lately I've been spending a bit of time lurking in "The Reloadbench" http://www.reloadbench.com

It's a fairly low traffic forum with an emphasis on reloading for precision shooting. I probably spend more time searching through the archives.

For Usenet/newsgroups, I'll browse through "rec.guns".

mean, falfiles.com is also tollerable for the most part. I would stear clear of any of the gunsnet.net forums and pre-ban.com is pretty bad as well.

19. The political screeds, rants and fist pounding...
tend be more sedate or non-existent in the more specialized and single subject firearms related forums.

Every now and then I might want to check-in on forums like

http://www.1911forum.com

or

http://www.smith-wessonforum.com

One of the nice things about the firearms community with relation to the Internet; name the make, model and/or manufacturer of a particular firearm and there's probably a website/forum/listserve out there for it.

Contrary to what some on here may think about me, I'm *not* anti-gun, but I am in favor of reasonable gun control measures. I hope most of you can wrap your heads around that.

23. The rub is this:
Many of us see "reasonable gun control measures" as the proverbial slippery slope. What is reasonable is subjective.

I also see the process as incremental. I believe that gun control measures begin as a plan to provide a little safety will lead to ever increasing regulation and eventualy the removal of legal firearms from our society.

When Congress gets involved in such things, it turns out like the old saw about a camel being a horse designed by committee. This needs to be left at the state level.

26. Lemme guess...
"using both hands" is your solution to the millions of guns in the hands of criminals today. "Using both hands" is the solution to the fact that those criminals can walk into Walmart and buy as much ammo as they need, to commit as many crimes as they would like to commit?

28. What a bunch of crap
Millions of guns are not in the hands of criminals. If that was true the violent crime rate in this country would be ten fold higher than what it is.

No. Keeping dangerous violent criminals in jail is my solution to that one.

Keeping dangerous violent criminals in jail would take care of that one as well.

27. So am I...
which is why I am happy the AWB sunsetted, was dissapointed to see the bill which limited municapility lawsuits against the gun industry, and would like to see every state become Right to Carry.

All very reasonable gun control measures. Though I am sure you would disagree.

30. Firearm Forums
There are a few firearm forums without strong political leanings, although most tend to be at least slightly conservative.

http://www.pistolsmith.com/ has some of the better gunsmiths in the business on board if your looking to trick out your race gun.

http://www.targettalk.org/ covers international (ISSF / UIT) rifle and pistol shooting. http://www.benchrest.com/forums/ covers benchrest shooting

http://www.thefiringline.com/ and it's younger incarnation
http://thehighroad.org/ have a broad range of firearm and shooting topics. TFL's search function is probably THE place to start when looking for firearm information.

http://www.pinkpistols.org/index2.html is pretty self-explainitory, although it has a conservative slant.

http://www.familyfriendsfirearms.com/forum/ , and http://proshooter.org/ (no politics, just guns), are basic firearm forums, although not as popular as TFL or THR.

There are several dozen I've missed. Probably oughta learn how to use the hyperlink function here first.
