No one shot, murdered in Chicago on Monday......
"For the first time since 1999, serious crime took a holiday Monday in Chicago.

Police Superintendent Phil Cline says none of the city's nearly three (m) million citizens got shot. And nobody was murdered.

Cline says he was amazed to wake up yesterday and find no news of any overnight shootings or killings. He attributes the success to the pressure the department's putting on gangs -- and a little bit of luck.

Last year, Chicago had 600 killings and just over three-thousand aggravated batteries by firearm."

Wow! I guess all those guns finally DID make everyone safer!

Hush my mouth!

1. You should hush, guns are banned in Chicago
Look how much good it has done. Criminals run rampant.

3. So the criminals just created guns out of thin air? Or imported them all?
Or just possibly, could the majority of these guns have started out life being purchased legally? And then somewhere (untraceably) they moved from the hands of "law-abiding" gun and gunshop owners into the hands of criminals.....

OK, so guns are banned in Chicago, but given that there's no traceability on legally purchased weapons it's hardly surprising that a few of the millions available in the US migrate into the hands of criminals.

It's so much harder for criminals to arm themselves when laws or processes are in place to find and punish people who sell guns to them.

4. You just don't get it.
When guns are banned, only criminals have them. Crime would be reduced if the government did its job to protect rights, rather than restrict freedom. Criminals prefer unarmed victims. You cannot argue with that. Banning the guns has emboldened criminals. I know how they get them. Robbery, burglary, smash and grabs. My local gunshop was victimized. A bunch of criminals ran a truck through the security bars after hours. They then proceeded to steal 47 handguns. Is the gun shop to blame? Hell no. Criminals are to blame. We need to quit coddling the bastards and let the armed citizenry fight back. Chicago is a crime ridden shithole. I know, I have family. I've been the victim of two attempted muggings there. I fought back, and didn't get robbed. Who's life is worth more? The victim or the rapist?

5. Sorry
Was going to come back on this last night but my entire area suffered a power cut which meant I had to resort to the more traditional British pursuits of bear baiting & witch ducking, which can be done just as well by candlelight. I'll try to respond at some point today if work allows..

6. Hmm
"traditional British pursuits of bear baiting & witch ducking,"

If you like those, you'll love Xtreme Witch Ducking... but you'll need lots of custard... which can be a pain to clean off the trebuchet.

7. Well actually I just went down the pub for a pint and some dinner.....
Tomatoes stuffed with bacon, blackpudding, red onion and egg, then baked in the oven and served with salad.

And Wadworth 6X.

Marvellous.

P.

P.S.
Extreme Witch Ducking sounds good - is it "love custard", or just the regular?

This morning I was looking at a newspaper ad for a DC bar called Coyote Ugly where the "gimmick" is to get supposedly real down-home bartender cowgirls to wear jeans, skimpy halter tops, and cowboy boots and do various country-dances on the bar, in between "serving" the patrons:

(more info:http://www.ontaponline.com/articles/index.php?id=219 )

I then remembered how I pass by an "authentic irish pub" on the way to and from the train station near my workplace, where I sometimes hear UK/Ire/Scot accents from the patrons coming and going from the pub.

If you UK/Ire/Scot guys came to the US, would you want to be taken to an "authentic UK/Ire/Scot bar" by well-meaning American buddies, or would you prefer to try a "hole in the wall American bar?" I would think the American bar would be a no-brainer as being more interesting for you guys?(assuming guys here)

Any thoughts?

What's a 'hole in the wall bar'?

I visited a couple of Irish bars in Toronto because I was there around St Patrick's Day, and the Torontoians (err...people from Toronto) that me and my travelling companion met up with, being Italian-Canadians, wanted to celebrate St Paddy's Day by getting plastered on pints of the black stuff.

I wasn't really bothered where I drank as long as it had good beer... and after learning the hard way that Carlsberg Red is the devil's own brew and switching to a locally brewed IPA I was quite happy.

That being said, if I was in Texas I would like to drink somewhere which reflected the local colour; sawdust on the floor, a mechanical piano and gunfights (if the movies are true)... similarly for other places in the US.

10. sorry about that
"hole in the wall" and Coyote Ugly in the same post could be, umm "suggestive" . . . .

"Hole in the wall" generally refers to a place being a real low-profile joint, stuck between some other higher profile places/stores, etc., in an urban block. The sort of place only locals would go to because it's so low-key and full of not-so-well-heeled clientele. Politely friendly, but not quite creepy.

17. Or...
When guns are banned in one place, the criminals go elsewhere to get them. That's why I think standardized, nation-wide purchasing requirements and waiting periods might be a good idea.

19. There are standardized requirements.
Welcome back...we missed you. I hope all is well.

Must go through a background check. Usually NICS.

You are correct, when guns are banned in one place, the criminals will acquire them through extra-legal means. That is why gun bans don't work. Therefore, based upon your observation, I say that all gun bans should be lifted.

16. Made it through Tuesday too!
Chicago had 2 days with no murders in the city.

Our "lucky streak" broke Wednesday morning at about 2AM when a drug buy went bad on the South Side and a guy was killed on a street corner.

20. We need to legalize drugs...
As far as I've seen working in a convience store I've never had a tobacco or alcohol sale go bad.
