GUNS IN THE NEWS--July 30, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

5. Man shot at S.F. strip club
"SAN FRANCISCO A man was shot in the neck early this morning outside a San Francisco strip club where witnesses say several members of the Hells Angels motorcycle club were present.
Police are still trying to determine if any members of the notorious club had anything to do with the shooting.
Police are investigating three possible motives for the shootings. The victim may have gotten involved in an altercation involving prostitution, admission to the New Century strip club -- or he might have touched a motorcycle belonging to one of the Hells Angels."

6. Hmm...
If they didn't have a gun they would have just fashioned a crude protectile weapon out of a dancer's thong, some baking soda and the internal components from an 8-track player.

Those Hell's Angels are quite resourceful in that way.

10. Pretty common in that part of the city, unfortunately.
Newport News is notorious for it's crime, drugs, and violence. This is so common up there that it's almost a non-event anymore. Sad, actually, that people have to live like that.

About 100 boys and girls from tiny tykes to high school seniors will be competing here Saturday in the 2004 Wisconsin Scholastic Clay Target Program State Clays Championships.

“They will be competing for trophies and bragging rights,” said Greg VanDenPlas, manager of Hunter’s Park.

15. Imagine that...
Teaching kids early about the dangers and responsibility associated with firearms. Teaching them that they are serious tools, not toys. What a horrible thing to teach a kid. Better to let 'em grow up ignorant, believing what they see on TV and in the movies. Believing the lies and disinformation from anti-gun biased sources in the media who know even less about firearms than the kids reading the story.

Teaching kids responsible shooting is 180 degrees out from forcing them to fight wars against other kids.

18. Father arrested for shooting son (IN)
Another family made safer with guns...

"FRANKFORT, Ind. -- A father has been arrested for shooting his teenage son in the groin, which he said was accidental.
Kevin Dean Gregory, 44, of Moran, was charged Wednesday with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, criminal recklessness, neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury and pointing a firearm.
He was being held in Clinton County Jail late Thursday on a $5,000 cash-only bond.
Gregory told police that on July 12 at his home in Moran, about 20 miles east of Lafayette, he jokingly pointed a .22-caliber rifle at the genitals of his son, Devin Gregory, 17, and the gun went off."

25. Autopsy: fatal shooting victim hit four times (WI)
"WISCONSIN RAPIDS - A 25-year-old town of Sherry man shot in Arpin early Sunday was hit four times by gunfire, including once in the head, according to preliminary autopsy results released Thursday.
The autopsy shows Forrest G. Vruwink was shot once in the head, once in the left groin, once in the right chest and once in the right shoulder. The official cause of death is multiple gunshot wounds, most notably a wound to the head, Wood County Coroner Garry Kronstedt said.
Robert M. Schueller, 54, of 7912 Highway E, Arpin, was arrested Sunday in Vruwink's shooting. He appeared in Wood County Circuit Court on Thursday for a second bond hearing, where Judge Greg Potter maintained a $250,000 cash bond.
When Potter first set the bond on Monday, Vruwink was in a coma at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, where he was flown after the shooting. At that time, the anticipated charge was attempted first-degree homicide. Vruwink died at 3:17 p.m. Tuesday."

31. Woman Sentenced For Shooting At Officers (FL)
Wonder how much this little escapade cost taxpayers?

"KEYSTONE HEIGHTS, Fla. -- A woman was sentenced to three years in prison Thursday for firing at Clay County sheriff's deputies during a domestic dispute.
On July 10, police were called to the home of 27-year-old LaRae Huff, who was threatening to harm her husband or anyone who came onto their property. When police arrived at the Lovebird Court home shortly before 6 p.m., Huff began firing a gun.
More officers were called, and negotiators tried to work with Huff, but she continued to shoot at them. A SWAT team arrived around 8 p.m., and Huff attempted to escape in her pickup truck, with a 12-gauge shotgun aimed out the window."

32. Deputies say Keys woman shot at lobster hunters snorkeling in canal (FL)
STOCK ISLAND – An elderly resident was arrested yesterday afternoon for firing her gun at two boatloads of lobster hunters who were snorkeling in the canal behind her house, the Monroe Sheriff's Office said of Friday.

MSO spokeswoman Becky Herrin said deputies were dispatched to a house on 12th Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. When Deputy Paul Shultz arrived with a number of other officers, they found 69-year-old Mary Workman on the back deck of her house yelling and waving her arms. After officers handcuffed her, they asked about the gun. She told them her gun was under the pillow on her bed. The pistol, a .38 caliber revolver, was found there and seized. Deputies said it appeared to have been recently fired.

(snip)

The incident occurred just hours before the state's two-day minilobster season was to end at midnight. Thousands of divers, netters and snorkelers hunted the lobsters this year.
