Man arrested in death of beaten quadriplegic

SAN ANTONIO - One man is in custody and two others are sought today in the beating death of a quadriplegic man inside a housing complex near the former Kelly Air Force Base. Three men and a woman were also hurt in the attack.

The 47-year-old quadriplegic's body was found Saturday morning on a bed in his ransacked apartment, with a pillow over his battered face. The victim, whom EMS technicians said had died from serious head trauma resulting from the beating, was not identified pending notification of relatives.

Although investigators weren't sure whether the victims knew their attackers, police don't believe the home invasion was a random attack.

The assailants were armed with knives, bats and a screwdriver when they forced their way into the one-bedroom apartment in southwest San Antonio, then repeatedly beat the woman and four men after forcing them to lie face-down on the living room floor.

Solis said the woman, described in her 20s, was sexually assaulted outside the apartment after she was ordered to disrobe in the kitchen. The assailants then blindfolded her, gave her a T-shirt to wear and tried to push her into a car, but she was able to escape and run to a neighbor's apartment where she pleaded for an ambulance.

5. what I always wonder ...

"I wonder how many people who had their wives, daughters, mothers, raped and said they wish they had a gun to protect themselves."

Oh, cripes, do I have to spell it out?

"People who had their wives ... raped" ... I know, it has to be framed this way because PEOPLE are not raped. Just people's women.

And once again, the misogynist roots of rape laws are exposed ... so once again, I ask: shall we repeal them now?

11. Oh please,.... misogynist roots of rape law???? that is interesting you
found that statement is some kind of misogynist blather I probably should have worded it a better way. Oh cripes, how bout WOMEN WHO HAVE BEEN RAPED is that better. ? Then ask the women if they would rather have had a gun to protect themselves. Then ask the husbands and fathers and so on if they would have rather had the one's they love been better self protected. In any case the question was never answered. Misogynist is hardly a word to throw around and acuse someone of being when you have no clue as to who I am. Throw me to the tigers for not being as PC as you think I should have been.

4. Well...that statement was....different. I realize that this guy...
...was not killed with a gun so his death is of course of no importance whatsoever but if the "gun grabbers" were ever successful at ridding violent criminals of guns we would still have to deal with the type that would beat a quadriplegic to death.

6. Yes, sadly that is true.
If you can figure out a legal way to ban evil sons-of-bitches, my hat's off to you.

Meanwhile, if we can reduce or eliminate guns, we can cut 'way back on the violent crimes against people who are NOT quadriplegics and who could run away from or fight back against, for example, a knife.

8. A chair, a briefcase, a purse, a tray, a heavy book, a backback,
any of these could be used to block a knife, and that's just off the top of my head. Any number of common, everyday objects people have at hand practically all the time, and I'm not even talking about people who have any training in self-defense. None of them would do diddley against a gun, by the way. Plus the fact that an outnumbered knife-wielder is far more likely to get dogpiled than an outnumbered gun wielder, and the fact that knife-wounds, generally speaking, are more surviveable than gunshot wounds.

9. Dog-piling on a guy with a knife sounds like
a good way to end up with some dead people to me.

I'd like to see some information backing up your claim that knife wounds, generally speaking, are more survivable than gunshot wounds.

12. Other things you can use to block a knife...
...your arms, your head, your liver...

BTW...Police vests don't stop knives.

10. That would be an interesting engineering project
Setting up mechanisms to point and fire a gun that could be operated by a quadriplegic.
