So You're Not Happy to See Me...
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 09:47 PM by MrBenchley
The liberals at Pandagon (are liberal sources allowed in the gungeon?) sound off on the armed right wing loonies in Virginia...

"I'm not quite sure what to say about this. I knew that some areas allowed concealed weapons but I'd never before seen "open carry" laws. I can't help thinking that, if you had to choose between them, open carry laws are preferable. The danger with concealed carry is that people get into an altercation (the non-Alterman kind and, in the heat of the moment, someone whips out a pistol. With open carry, the weaponry is on display from the start, making disputes less likely as rational people are terrified from the outset. Now, entering every conversation frightened and constantly biting your tongue is no way to go through life, so I wouldn't advocate open-carry, but it's a hell of a lot better than finding out the guy you just spilled coffee on has a hidden weapon and an attachment to his formerly white shirt."

4. Yet nutcases toting popguns in their pants
is being promoted by some of our "enthusiasts" as the epitome of "freedom."

'course they're not really fooling anyone.

5. Lets ban big muscular dudes...
they tend to keep disputes to a minimum too because apparently they "terrorize people."

Not all of us are fortunate enough to have the right genes to be big tall muscular dudes. Why should they be the only ones with the advantage.

I seem to have missed mine. Could you give me instructions for where I should look?

I'm an "anti-CCW type", so I must have one around here somewhere ...

9. LOL...well said! And kudos for turning...
...that so-often heard mantra from the gun control crowd about RKBA'ers only wanting to own firearms out of a "small penis" complex on it's head, so to speak! Excellent! Wish I'd thought of it first!

10. Other than LEOs and other people whose jobs require it,
in my opinion, three kinds of people carry guns around.

1) Criminals planning on committing a crime in the near future.
2) Paranoids who see bad guys hiding in every shadow.
3) Bullies who like the idea of being able to intimidate others.

I'm not happy to see any of those three kinds of people around me.

11. Well, those three types combined...
...make up a tiny percentage of people who legally carry firearms.

It's unfortunate that you see self-defense as "paranoia." When your best friend is randomly beaten to death for no reason right in front of your apartment, then you can talk to me about how "paranoid" it is. Maybe when your daughter or sister is raped, you'll change your mind about how "paranoid" it is.

Look, if you live in a place with such little crime that nobody ever needs to arm themselves, I'm very happy for you. I don't live in a place like that. Most people don't.

Hands up anybody who can tell the difference between:

- seeing bad guys hiding in every shadow

- defending one's self

There will be more prizes.

(Hint: are people who have defended themselves, or who will ever need to defend themselves, the same set as people who tote around firearms strapped to their persons? is there even a very significant intersection between the two sets?)

13. I lived in a place where my apartment was robbed seven times
in three months. Carrying a gun doesn't make the place better. It doesn't make you bulletproof or stabproof or anything-proof. It doesn't make you safe. It just makes you feel powerful.

14. Thanks for the amateur psychoanalysis.
But unfortunately, whether or not I arm myself has very little to do with "feeling powerful." It has to do with being prepared to use lethal force to stop a person who intends to use lethal force on me or my family.

I personally don't give a shit if you think that makes me "paranoid."

15. remember,
it's "better" to non-bulletproof, non-stabproof, and non-anything proof WITHOUT a means of counterattack, than to be those things WITH a means of counterattack.

We should just leave those "assault hairburushes" at home and sing kum-baye-yah . . . .

17. I lost my best friend to a random act of violence in front of my home.
I am completely convinced that if he had been armed at that moment, he'd still be alive.

21. I Do, As Well
A gun nut up in Colorado Springs who I've been sparring with on local talk radio has made several veiled threats against me. But did I go out and get a gun? Hell, no - I'm not gonna stoop to that imbecile's level.

22. Anybody who argues for gun control
usually gets that shit....which is as hollow as everything else in the RKBA bag of tricks.

and again, if the movement wasn't rotten from stem to stern, its advocates wouldn't be sending emails saying "I could be right next to you and you wouldn't know"....

frequent gun battles with the Klan, with biker gangs, with local cops....etc.
