Casper City Council weighing options on whether to ban open-carry guns in city meetings (WY)

Casper, Wyo. — The Casper City Council is deliberating whether to move ahead with an ordinance that would ban people from openly carrying guns into city meetings.

State law already prohibits people from carrying concealed firearms into city meetings including city council meetings. The law doesn't address weapons carried in the open.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/rWIctq ) the Casper City Council ordinance would make it illegal to bring any deadly weapon into a city meeting.

The ordinance passed an initial vote 6-3 Tuesday. Some council members favor holding off on the measure in case the Wyoming Legislature passes a law addressing the issue this winter.

1. If Wyoming disallows local communities from contradicting its laws...
then the city of Casper may not be able to ban open-carry in its public spaces.

The state legislature may clear this up, since a court challenge may hinge on "intent" of the current law.

2. I wonder how this became an issue
after so many years. Open carry was always legal, I don't remember anyone actually doing it in town.

for any interested in related facts.

(Heh, I got confused. In the article, somebody wanted to table the issue. In Canada, when you table something, you present it for a vote. But then I remembered you speak a different tabling down there ...)
