Seized guns cram police store rooms - Idasa - SA
Many police station store rooms are "overflowing" with confiscated guns that should have been destroyed or given back to their legal owners.

Despite having these gun stashes, police have recovered only around 29 percent of the guns used in serious crimes.

These are some of the findings of the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (Idasa) in their research into serious crime cases at 14 police stations nationally. Gun Free South Africa, which commissioned the study, has urged the government to declare an amnesty for people wishing to hand in illegal firearms.
